1 John 4:2-3 (NKJV)

2 By this you know the Spirit of God:

every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,

3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh

is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard

was coming, and is now already in the world.

I have never encountered anyone on a Christian forum who could explain what

1 John 4:2 is all about, i.e. what John was actually writing to fellow believers!

I always ended up saying that John was writing in Christian code language:

God came in the flesh, i.e. God was born into the world.

The following is the only Bible version that I am aware of

which translates the true meaning …

1 John 4:1-3 (The Amplified Bible, original edition)

1 Dearly loved friends, don’t always believe everything you hear

just because someone says it is a message from God:

test it first to see if it really is. For there are many false teachers around,

and the way to find out if their message is from the Holy Spirit is to ask:

Does it really agree that Jesus Christ, God’s Son, actually became

man with a human body? If so, then the message is from God.

If not, the message is not from God but from one who is against Christ,

like the “Antichrist” you have heard about who is going to come,

and his attitude of enmity against Christ is already abroad in the world.

IMO, back in John’s day, all genuine Christians believed in the Triune Godhead,

i.e. the Trinity was taught in all genuine Spirit-led churches.

In the Gospels, Jesus declared Himself to be the Son of God (and I AM as well).

In the letters to the churches, the writers taught the Triune Godhead.

1 John 4:2 is the test for the genuineness of prophets.

But IMO, this is also a good test to see if a person has been born again from above,

i.e. does a person have the holy Spirit dwelling inside of them.

IMO, if he/she does have the indwelling Spirit, He will teach them about the Trinity.

What do you think?

“Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins;

for if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins.” (John 8:24)

There is NO “He” in the original Greek; most translations just add it for readability.

Ditto for about 6 other verses in John.

There is no material difference between "born into the world" and "man with a human body".  The Gnostics were falsely presenting a dichotomy between the Son of God and the Man Jesus of Nazareth which meant that God did not really become a Man.  This was the heresy being addressed.
