I once met a lady who announced that she had today been saved, sanctified, filled with the Holy Spirit, spoke in tongues etc.  This was the third time this had occurred in her life.  To my knowledge she never returned to that pentecostal Church of God again.  She was proud and boastful, which are not fruit of the Holy Spirit.  I have some serious questions about it being the Holy Spirit by which she spoke in tongues.  Another person who exhibited the same "fruit" and proudly paced around his house speaking in tongues before guests also was used to split a church as he boasted about his speaking in tongues.  But these are a minority of the ones I have known.  Most were humble, Godly people who endured ridicule by religious people, and who demonstrated the compassion and forgiveness of God toward those very people.  Jesus said you shall know them by their fruit, and again by their love for one another.

I remember that the sound of a might wind and tongues resting upon the disciples as being mentioned prior to their speaking in tongues.  Their tongues were also prayers and praise glorifying God.  They were imbued with power to testify concerning Jesus, which is what Peter promptly did so that thousands believed and were baptized.  But of these, while he said that the gift of the Holy Spirit was promised them, there is no mention of these converts speaking in tongues.  Some did, some didn't, but all were born again of God.  All true believers have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and received the spirit of adoption, the Holy Spirit crying Abba Daddy in their hearts.  Romans 8:15-16 Eph 1:13-14  Gal:4:6

If all had tongues then by the same logic all are apostles, prophets, teachers, all work miracles, all heal, etc..

Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
(1Co 12:29-31)

That is not the teaching of Scripture.

For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith; Or ministry, let us wait on our ministering: or he that teacheth, on teaching; Or he that exhorteth, on exhortation: he that giveth, let him do it with simplicity; he that ruleth, with diligence; he that sheweth mercy, with cheerfulness.
(Rom 12:4-8)

Yes, and what COGTHW is trying to push here is taken WAY out of context; that is the danger of "cherry-picking" verses to suit one's agenda, as well as the danger of eisegesis.

Excellent reply, Yowm. :)

It is without scholastic error to view the historical significance of Acts as transitional from law to grace OT to NT... to view it any other way is to invite out of text determinations on the whole...

When we get saved, we have the Holy Ghost, which begins his redemptive work in us, and brings about the fruit of the Spirit, and afterwards water baptism which does not save us, follows.

Now sometimes you get water baptised first, and then baptised or immersed (a spiritual immersion) in the Holy Ghost, but sometimes it is the other way around.

You get born again before you get water baptised and baptised with the Holy Ghost.

You are not saved by water baptism and the baptism of the Holy Ghost, but it does follow salvation , and there are some who have not received the baptism of the Holy Ghost, and of course are saved.

And some who have not gotten water baptised, which they should, and are saved.

I am not a pentecostal, but do have a pentecostal background.

So what exactly is the baptism with the holy ghost. I have heard that statement many times, but need a clear explanation.

Question: "What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit?"

Answer:
The baptism of the Holy Spirit may be defined as that work whereby the Spirit of God places the believer into union with Christ and into union with other believers in the body of Christ at the moment of salvation. The baptism of the Holy Spirit was predicted by John the Baptist (Mark 1:8) and by Jesus before He ascended to heaven: “For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1:5). This promise was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:1–4); for the first time, people were permanently indwelt by the Holy Spirit, and the church had begun.

First Corinthians 12:12–13 is the central passage in the Bible regarding the baptism of the Holy Spirit: “For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink” (1 Corinthians 12:13). Notice that we “all” have been baptized by the Spirit—all believers have received the baptism, synonymous with salvation, and it is not a special experience for only a few. While Romans 6:1–4 does not mention specifically the Spirit of God, it does describe the believer’s position before God in language similar to the 1 Corinthians passage: “What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”

The following facts are necessary to help solidify our understanding of Spirit baptism: First, 1 Corinthians 12:13 clearly states that all have been baptized, just as all been given the Spirit to drink (the indwelling of the Spirit). Second, nowhere in Scripture are believers told to be baptized with, in or by the Spirit, or in any sense to seek the baptism of the Holy Spirit. This indicates that all believers have had this experience. Third, Ephesians 4:5 seems to refer to Spirit baptism. If this is the case, Spirit baptism is the reality for every believer, just as “one faith” and “one Father” are.

In conclusion, the baptism of the Holy Spirit does two things, 1) it joins us to the body of Christ, and 2) it actualizes our co-crucifixion with Christ. Being in His body means we are risen with Him to newness of life (Romans 6:4). We should then exercise our spiritual gifts to keep that body functioning properly as stated in the context of 1 Corinthians 12:13. Experiencing the one Spirit baptism serves as the basis for keeping the unity of the church, as in the context of Ephesians 4:5. Being associated with Christ in His death, burial, and resurrection through Spirit baptism establishes the basis for our separation from the power of indwelling sin and our walk in newness of life (Romans 6:1-10; Colossians 2:12).

You need the baptism in the water in Jesus name and Holy Ghost to make it to heaven if not you not going to heaven. You have the Holy Ghost when you 1st speak in tongues. And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; Mark 16:17 Jesus said you will speak in a new tongue. ;

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Acts 2:4 Bible say you have the evidence of the Holy Ghost when you speak in tongues.

Thank you missmuffet for the concise reply.

So in essence the word  ghost replaces  or is the same as the spirit.   Just want to clarify.

This is interesting and what i always wanted to ask from a pentecostal.      So what you are saying is if you do not speak in tongues you are not saved.? Just want to make sure.

Then i have to tell my sister her husband is not going to heaven.  How can i break that news. oh boy what a dilemma.
