1 Chronicles 21:1New American Standard Bible (NASB)

Census Brings Pestilence

21 Then Satan stood up against Israel and moved David to number Israel.

Can anyone "EXPOUND" [ present and explain (a theory or idea) systematically and in detail. (google). ]  the above scripture verse.  How could satan move David. what is the meaning behind that and how could he do that.

Don't need to do all that. Satan put an idea into David's head (mind) and David went with it. It happens every day, even to you and me. When we do dumb things, that we know are wrong or dumb but we do them anyway.

David also had a king.  He should of consulted God before he did anything.  It was after all God's Kingdom that David was put in charge of and God wanted everything carried out according to his commands concerning Israel.

It doesn't have to be a detailed explanation because it is so simple.  The enemy moved David to do something he knew would displease God, and David did not consult God first before going ahead.

The numbering of Israel would feed David's pride, so Satan planted the seed of this in David's heart. This is similar to the temptations of Christ by Satan in the wilderness.

Knowing the past history of Israel, David already knew that numbers meant nothing to God.  But he went ahead foolishly and paid for it. This is similar to the parable of the rich fool, who added up his wealth to bask in it, but died before he could enjoy anything.

In contrast, in the book of James a bit different words are used to describe our temptation and lust.

James 1: 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin [f]is accomplished, it brings forth death.

How do we know when our temptation is from satan and when it our own lust if we are indeed tempted by both situations.  What measure or tools we have for that and can we be sure.

Surely David would have had to think some consequence would be had as seventy thousand people died because of that action.  So what prevented him from consulting the Lord, before going ahead.  Just trying to get a grip of why he would do something that would cause a lot of death.

He did not know that in advance.

God could of intervened and stopped David if he wanted to, but he didn't.  Maybe those 70,000 souls were ready for their judgement day which is why God did not stop him.

...And maybe David had to be humbled also like we all do once in a while, no man has ever been perfect, without sin, even God's favourites.

David also sinned when he lusted after Solomon's mother, causing her husband's death by sending him to war on the front line.  David was punished for this also, but mercy was given later.

By receiving mercy, for something wicked we've done, ...can never fully be understood, or appreciated unless we go through it.  David was fully inspired in writing psalms through his downfall, appreciating God more than ever before because his soul was spared.
