Many of those who come illegally have no interest in becoming citizens.

How do you know that? What is their interest in being in America?

In arizona, they come in, work, send money to mexico. Its considered an important of their economy in mexico. Then at some point they turn themselves in and get a free ride back to mexico. Very few of them make any attempt to become citizens here. This is something that we have known here for years, even decades.

We need to punish business that hire illegals who take jobs from Americans who need those jobs.  They need to pay the taxes they were trying to avoid by paying illegals under the table and they need to pay some fines, as well.    Hit the bottom line, target their profitability and they will drop illegals like a hot potato.

We need a legitimate guest worker program so migrants can come here and work, filling the spots companies cannot fill, and then return when their time is up.

That's a good idea, so long as we can enforce it by keeping track of the migrants, making sure they and the companies that use them, pay the appropriate taxes and we know where they are living over here, when their time is up, and making sure that they actually do leave when it's time.

And if they decided they want to immigrate, the time they served on the work program could be counted toward their 5 year legal resident wait period, so long as they keep their noses clean.

Ah, there's the rub.

That's reasonable, and "we the people" would likely support such a program.  Unfortunately, it is not in the interest of two other entities - the business lobby/republican party, and the democrat party.  The democrats want their votes; and the pubs and their small business cronies want their continued cheap labor and exploitation.

Anyway, if memory serves, we just had an election where "we the people" spoke.  Now - in the next few years - we shall see if they were heard.

Blessings,

-Ed

I think where the Democrats are not thinking this through is that these people if allowed to stay here, won't be satisfied with voting Democrat.  As has been discovered in Minnesota, these people will want to run for office, too.   The Dems want them to have all of the privileges of citizenship.  Well that includes being part of a representative form of government.   They want someone from among the migrants to represent them.

The Democrats just wanted to use them for votes.  They are not counting on these migrants to get active in the political process and unseat the Democrats, themselves.   If they had thought it through, they would have probably have not wanted them to come over in droves.

Both parties are short sighted, I believe.  They tend to not look more than past the next election.  Rarely do they consider long term consequences.

As far as the Rs are concerned, to me they appear even stupider than the Ds.  By cheering on continued illegal immigration and "looking the other way" when it comes to actual laws being broken, they are complicit in planting the seeds of their own demise.

It doesn't get much dumber than that.

Anyway, now it's going to be up to Mr. Trump and the Congress to finally respond to what "we the people" have been saying for the last decade or so.  The first order of business will be for the R 'leadership (?)' in Congress to FINALLY lead.  It's an open question as to whether or not that will happen - McConnell's history is he has shown no leadership  in opposing Obama and the democrats thus far.  He always has a ready made excuse.

For his part, the 'loyal' opposition in the form of NY State's finest Chuck Schumer has declared many of Trump's proposals "dead on arrival".  If the filibuster rules remain, he is correct.  Harry Reid got rid of the filibuster and that was okay.  I guess we shall find out what McConnell plans to do.

Blessings,

-Ed
