Keep in mind that we have already given the Executive Branch the power of indefinite detention of anyone that deem an "enemy combatant" without any sort of hearing, trial or access to a lawyer. This includes American citizens.

This is a very different thing than the government recording, reading ,listening to your emails, text, phone calls and more.

When I buy something online as you speak of I fully accept the fact that the data is being tracked and used, that is part of the deal with you choose to buy online.   It is no different than all the "discount" cards that stores give, you know by using them your data is being tracked.

But they are not collecting emails and text and then running them through a data mining program looking for key words to then dig further into.  What happens when those key words are "homosexual" or "gay marriage" and the government is knocking on people's doors for hate speech, you know all in the name of keeping us safe?

I have often wondered if the commercial tracking like you're talking about is part of a plan to desensitize us to being tracked.  That way when the government does decide to do it, there won't be any resistance.  It's like all of these drones people get and play with.  If drones become common place, when the government uses them to spy on us, we won't even notice.

I don't know if this is true, but I have heard that if your car has OnStar installed that the FBI can demand your location from OnStar.

I have read more than one story about the police getting OnStar to disable a car during a high speed chase, so the location thing is not to far off from that.

Google is tracking our data; advertisers and on-line retailers are tracking our data.  Let's say you go online and buy a Disney DVD.  Take a note then as to how many ads for similar DVDs will 'suddenly appear' in the advertising portion of every website you visit.

Its even worse than that. I got a phone call from a local business about walk in tubs. My phone number is unlisted so I asked how they got the number and determined my interest in this. Because I know I never gave it out. The woman on the phone said you must have looked online at walk in tubs. (I had done so.) So they got my unlisted phone number, my name, from looking at an ad online via google. THAT should frighten anyone.

Ive been subject to unreasonable searches every time I go to southern arizona. On an interstate, Ive had to drive past a drug sniffing dog. On a state highway I was told to lower my tinted windows so a federal agent could peek inside. Their reason for doing so? My car was dusty.

Absolutely,it work just like LoJack.....I have some friends in the LOCAL PD that have gotten co-operation from OnStar quickly & easily with just a phone call so if a local pd can do it certainly the FBI can

The  Intelligence Authorization Act 2015 gave the spy agencies authorization to not need warrants, so it does not have to go before a judge to be used, as its collection followed the law.   Oh, and it also changed the wording to "to or from a US person", so they are not limited to just those originating outside the US, not that they followed that rule anyhow.

Good faith question:  Used how?

Because if all you're saying is its COLLECTION followed the law, you're in effect saying that the law has been simply updated to reflect what I've been saying is going to happen anyway - i.e. the collection of data.  Or do you really believe that if the law does not permit data gathering, that all of the modern day J. Edgars and James Bonds will all of a sudden stop gathering it?  Because if history is a judge, it is NOT going to happen.  Like I wrote earlier, Hoover was gathering data without a warrant on MLK long ago.

Like it or not, we live in an age when all kinds of information is there for the taking.  Agencies no longer have to place bugs or phone taps.  All we can do (which I am entirely for) is remain vigilant.  One point you forgot to mention - at least with Trump in charge, we will all of a sudden return to the days of a vigilant press and a watchdog ACLU.  So perhaps this will ease your fears.

Once it is a more Obama-like regime doing this, THEN I will be more concerned.  And I am concerned about the precedent being set.

As as aside though, at least this topic has united some Worthy-ites.  That's a good thing.

Blessings,

-Ed

Yeah, while your phone number is unlisted with your local directory, you must have entered it into an online form somewhere when you were shopping for walk in tubs.  THAT information (i.e. anything you put online) becomes available online.

Reputable dealers will state they do not share their lists or any data they collect.  That remains to be seen.

Blessings,
