from Aaron Goldstein:

"I know a lot of conservatives are cheering President-Elect Donald Trump's appointment of General James Mattis as Secretary of Defense.

"I am not.

"In July 2013, shortly after Mattis left his post as CENTCOM Commander, he blasted Israel at the Aspen Security Forum with regard to its settlement policy...."

"... Can any Republican tell me [Aaron Goldstein] how Mattis claiming Israel could become an Apartheid state is any different than when Secretary of State John Kerry made the same claim in April 2014?

"After eight years of President Obama's hostility to Israel, President-Elect Trump had a very low bar to clear. With his appointment of Steve Bannon and now James Mattis, it would seem that Trump is keeping President Obama's hurdles in place."

Mattis is wrong.  Israel will never become an Apartheid state.  The very character of the country defies any notion that it will become an apartheid state.   Israel has proven for over 6 decades that it is the polar opposite of an apartheid state.

This is just another Muslim and Arab attempt to attack Israel, with the collusion of politicians of every stripe in almost every country. Since the term *apartheid* has an extremely negative connotation, simply using that term creates negativity.

The focus should really be on the genocidal determination of Muslims and Arabs to exterminate Israel and all Jews (and no one talks about that any more).  The mistake that Israel has made several times is not finishing what they began, and achieving total victory or Hamas and Hezbollah.

That was also the original mistake of the Israelites when they entered Canaan with Joshua and were told to eliminate all the Canaanites, but failed to do so. Thus they paid for it in many ways.  Also King Saul was judged very severely for sparing one of God's enemies.

It's too late to worry about the Canaanites, however....

"Does Mattis believe we should have a less robust relationship with Israel?
Does [Mattis ] honestly think the so-called moderate Arab nations would be fully on board with America if Israel were to dismantle all settlements?
How does Mattis explain the rocket attacks into Israel from Gaza where the last Jewish settlement was dismantled in 2005?..."

If the answer to all the above is "apartheid," then "Mad Dog" Mattis was the wrong choice for Israel. Trump said Mattis was the closest thing to "Blood and Guts" George Patton, but Patton was probably an anti-Semite.

He didn't pick Mattis for Israel.  Even the Bush administration, which was far more friendly to Israel than the Obama administration, got it wrong about Israel.

And I would add that Mattis isn't even confirmed yet.  Mattis views in the Muslims the same enemy that Israel has.  We have yet to see his true posture on Israel.

Three years ago Mattis said that America pays a price for its perceived "bias" in support of Israel, which just happens to be the only regional democracy as compared to the corrupt Arab regimes that dominate the entire Middle East.

I have yet to hear his retraction.

Doesn't matter.  He is still wrong.  And he is allowed to be wrong.  He is defense minister, not envoy to Israel.
