I thought that was a no no He had a military ID and I think is member of the National Guard which is a reserve component of the US Army. So I think he had the clearance to have a gun on the flight, but not on his person during the flight. I think only law enforcement like police and Air Marshalls can carry a weapon on their person. They have to bring the approved application to the airport and declare the weapon to the baggage people. Ammunition must not be in the same bag as the weapon. He just found a loop hole in our system. I am not aware of any airport that this would not have been possible in. You can probably look for a change as to when the weapon is given back to the person and as in Cruise Ports security at the exits of the airport. If you leave something behind at a Cruise port it is very difficult to get permission to go back into the cruise port to retrieve it. I picked up the wrong bag several years ago and it took me two hours to get back and retrieve mine.

I thought that was a no no Legally, you can as long as it's secured in a locked case separate from the ammo in your checked in luggage only. Nothing in carry on. In theory it's safe because once you get past check-in you no longer have access to your check in luggage. How this guy managed to is beyond me, I never see my check in luggage until I get where I'm going. Unless he pulled it out before he got to the ticket counter. He went to the baggage claim area after he landed, got his suitcase, got the gun and started shooting people. He was not in the secure area.
