(Worthy News) - The U.S. Senate on Thursday took a first concrete step toward dismantling Obamacare, voting to instruct key committees to draft legislation repealing President Barack Obama's signature health insurance program.

The vote was 51-48. The resolution now goes to the House of Representatives, which is expected to vote on it this week. Scrapping Obamacare is a top priority for the Republican majorities in both chambers and Republican President-elect Donald Trump.

Republicans have said that the process of repealing Obamacare could take months, and developing a replacement plan could take longer. But they are under pressure from Trump to act fast; he said on Wednesday that the repeal and replacement should happen "essentially simultaneously." [ Source ]

They have had, 5 or even 6 years to develop a replacement plan, and yet now we are told we have to wait some more for them to do so.

It's going to take a while because they'll have to figure out a way to 'sell' a new healthcare entitlement.  It will have to be modeled after Social Security.  It's going to have to 'cover' everyone, and it will require a new payroll withholding deduction or some sort of excise tax.

No politician or political party  ever wants to propose raising taxes because it means a bloodbath at the next election.

Once healthcare is 'free', we'll really see how much it costs.  Both in shortages - and denials - of services.

Woo hoo!!

Blessings,

-Ed

Well, there was no point to do so, because Obama would have just vetoed it. And on top of that they have-Mike Enzi, the senator from Wyoming has, as a matter of fact presented a alternative plan, but it gained no ground due to the administration pretty much shutting it down and no one in the house wanting to rock the boat.

Trump promised a repeal and replace that would have no lag time in the interim. Obamacare would be repealed and immediately replaced so that policy holders would not lose any protections.

There isn't really any excuse for today's GOP to not have something to go on the replace field. They've worked on this since 2009.

Obama will lose his "legacy" the same way he got it. I used to think that the next administration should do an investigation into his dealings. But now, I think him having to sit helplessly by as his legacy is dismantled by the same means he built it, is better than an investigation. An investigation would only result in him looking like he is being persecuted. He did so many things by executive order, and they can be overturned by executive order. So he really set us up pretty good. By not going through Congress to get his bills signed into law, Trump doesn't have to go through the long process of going through Congress. He can just un-sign those executive orders. And now that both Houses have voted to repeal Obamacare, his signature legislation, his legacy is falling down around his ears WHILE he is still president.

the most productive thing they could do for lowering the costs is to limit the amount that people can get out of court actions.

I have an acquaintance that does open heart surgery and he tells us that he has to work for nearly two months a year just to make his malpractice insurance premiums.

My personal doctor says similar things.

ive been saying this for years. I have some liberal friends, who are convinced obamacare is the only solution, and I try to explain to them if they get rid of the ambulance chasers and limit lawsuits, that healthcare costs would shrink dramatically, possibly to the point many would be able to afford it WITHOUT health insurance, which would also lower health insurance rates as they would have to find a way to lower them if they want to stay in business. So much of health care costs are malpractice insurance its not even funny.

I don't think people understand that the insurance industry is the most regulated industry in the US.   Because of thier business practices back in the 60's it was made obvious that they could not be trusted.

Each state is a little different, but in most states the premium limits are decided by state agencies and they have to have permission to raise the rates over a certain percentage each year and even then justify them.

The insurance company starts out with a rather large sum of money and sell policies to individual people.   As they pay out the expenses of peoples medical needs they use premiums to replace the money in the big pot that pays the medical bills.    most states demand that they spend a certain percentage of premium money for those expenses.   So there really is very little that can be saved by competition....     what would help would be across state lines so the pool of premium payments are scattered across a very large number of people of all ages and health so that each member would pay less each month....    but there may well be unintended consequences from all that also.....    New York and California would be setting the rules for all insurance and I have a problem with democrats in those two states setting up those rules.....   and me paying for illegal's.

Well, they need to do what the Democrats refused to do.  The Democrats refused to debate the Obamacare bill.  They rammed it through with no debate and without reading what was in it.

The legislative process is slow and the founders wanted it to be a slow process so that Congress could debate and hash things out.  We do not and should not make laws impulsively the way Obama wanted to do it.

We would not buy a car the way the Congress "bought" Obamacare, which was basically sight unseen.

Back 2010 there were other options, but the Democrats controlled all three levers of power and refused to entertain any suggested alternative to Obamacare.   This, while the claim that Republicans didn't offer a plan.   The Dems would not allow another plan to see the light of day.   Now we get to see what our other options would have been and which of those will work the best and can be made even better.
