Vantablack: It's blacker than black, but where is the world's darkest material being used?

This is kinda scary concept!

I think of the "blackness" in Exodus with the Egyptians and also with Abraham .

Matthew Henry Commentary
10:21-29 The plague of darkness brought upon Egypt was a dreadful plague. It was darkness which might be felt, so thick were the fogs. It astonished and terrified. It continued three days

Genesis xv.12.

"And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him."

I have experienced that kind of black.....    being 3 layers deep from a window in a building we were staying in at a Xerox training center while at 3:30 AM taking a shower and the lights go out.....   There is no light, and I agree you could cut it with a knife.  like being totally blind...   and you are right, it's really spooky.

For me it was in a cave and the guide turned out all of the lights.

I agree. It is creepy.

By the way, did you ever know that a match actually does give off a lot of light? I discovered that in one of my dark cave experiences!

I have also....   I think it was in Carlsbad....   we all had to set down when they turned off the lights and as our eyes adjusted to no light, when they struck a match, I was shocked at how much light it showed in that big old cave....     also was kind of impressive in how adaptive our eyes are.

A few years ago we lived in a house on what they call a private road.

So, no streetlights anywhere. and people went to bed early for some reason.

If you came back late it was really black on some nights.

Walking along you struggle to see your own hand in front of your face.

I know that spooked a lot of people who had lived city/suburban mostly.

Fascinating. Though I will say if this was being applied to our Stealth wing I very much doubt it would be made public. That would seem to defeat the whole purpose surrounding the stealth purpose.

I know that pitch black.  We went on vacation and visited Luray caverns in Virginia. The guide had the staff turn off the string of lights in the main cavern so we could see what the first explorers encountered once they broke through. I swear that darkness had a presence feel to it.As if it was an entity to itself. And I couldn't see my hand even when it was touching the end of my own nose. Impenetrable blackness. It was kind of cool and humbling at the same time.

I'm not claustrophobic. I had to have an MRI once. Where they put you into that huge tube like thing and scan? It thumps as its taking the images and sounds like the machine has a heartbeat of its own. The top of the tube is less than 8 inches from your face. The tech said they've had people come crawling out of there screaming because they couldn't take it and they weren't claustrophobic before hand. Me, I read a book.

You may be surprised and not effected at all being in a cave situation. It's very cool temperature, wide open and absolutely gorgeous. In Luray caverns, (Luray Virginia) , they have lights stung about to prevent harm to the natural structures and to still afford good light to gaze in wonder at the stalagmites and such.

When the lights go out , and they warn you beforehand, it is otherworldly. I loved it. I can still remember that feeling. Truly, it was as if the black had a presence. Obscured by the power of the lights before, now with the lights shut off the black came into its own. Truly humbling and invigorating at the same time. I kid you not, you couldn't see anything. I even waved my hand in front of my eyes as it brushed my nose so I would have a focal point for my eyes when it brushed that. Never saw a thing. Not one outline of my own hand.

That's what the first spelunkers, cave explorers, saw when they broke through into that particular part of the cavern. That they went on with their modest lighting at the time being Luray was discovered in 1878 , I admire their resolve to venture forth.
