You are letting him off the hook too easily. He has a solemn duty to know about all false religions and false doctrines (and expose them), if he himself is not an apostate. So he simply cannot plead ignorance. The Early Church Fathers were battling heresies, and writing extensively about them. Unfortunately, the mainline denominations turned their backs on Bible Christianity a long time ago, and the Pope has been spouting nonsense about the God of Christianity being the same as the god of Islam. Islam is a blatant attack against Christianity, since Mohammad was fully aware of the Gospel as well as the Old Testament.
