For all of the people on here who think our soul goes out of existence until god brings us back to life what about this?

Genesis 35:18 says, "her soul was departing," not "she was departing."

1 Kings 17:21-22 says, "the child's soul came back to him," not "the child came back."

Psalm 146:4 says, "his spirit departs, he returns to the earth." It does not say "he departs, his body returns to the earth."

Luke 8:55 says, "her spirit returned and she awoke," not "she returned and awoke."

Acts 20:10 says, "his soul is still in him," not "he is still in his body."

Also in ps 90:10-12 it says at death we fly away.
Notice it says we fly away.Not just "our soul flys away" like in genesis 35:18 says, "her soul was departing," not "she was departing."

In ps 90:10-12 it says we fly away at death.

Notice at death we fly away.Not just"our soul flys away. Like in genesis 35:18 it says, "her soul was departing" not "she was departing.

This makes ecc 12:7 make since when it says our spirit returns to god.

By the way i got most of this from here: http://wordonly.net/CI07.html

I much rather prefer 2 Corinthians 5:1-8

For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.

So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

Soul sleep is false, and so is the annihilation of souls. Also, so is the transmigration of souls.

I agree.  Soul sleep is a false doctrine used by those who misuse the cultural differences between then and now.  Sleep used to mean that the body had stopped functioning in this realm, not that the soul or spirit had died or gone to sleep.

The believer's soul goes immediately to heaven when a person dies. The unbeliever's soul goes immediately to Hades when a person dies. When Jesus was hanging on the cross and talking to the thief on one side of Him who was a believer Jesus said "Today you will be with me in Paradise". In reference to "sleep" in the Bible it does not mean literal sleeping. It is a way to describe death. Soul sleep is not Biblical.

With Hades you mean hell, right?

jehowas witnesses believes your soul is put to sleep. Pretty much the same reasoning as in the thread.

Zorgblar, I wish I knew if you're a new believer and how old you are. I've been a believer a long time and I've learned there are many things we can't know for certain. A lot of people think we can but I don't. But we can know for certain the things that really matter. What matters is what God wants from us. God wants us to listen to His son who is Jesus. And Jesus told us to be kind and loving to everyone, even people who aren't very nice. This is what it means to accept Jesus as the Lord of our lives.

I'll also tell you it's not good to try and dwell into what we call the spiritual world. Everything we need to know about that world is in the Bible. People who try and go beyond what God tells us end up communicating with evil spirits. I've seen what this does to people and its not pretty. So if we just obey Jesus then whatever happens after death, the good and the bad, we will be with the good people. I think the older you get the more sense this makes. I can see you're very curious about the same things I once was too. I finally realized I could never know for certain and that those things don't really matter. Obeying God is what matters.

Yes, Hades is linked with hell.Hades is a waiting place until the great white throne judgement. But the lake of fire is where all the unbelievers will be thrown into along with Satan and all his demons at the white thrown judgement at the end of the 1000 year millennium. This is a conscience eternal torture which will last forever. These souls will not be annihilated but will endure this punishment never ending.

Present-day defenders of soul sleep include the Seventh Day Adventist church, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christadelphians, and others.

All about hell as recorded in Scripture.

Hell is mentioned in many dozens of Scriptures throughout the Bible. There are five departments in the underworld of departed Spirits, not one of these places is associated with or is the grave where bodies are buried.

These five departments are;

One). Paradise;
In Luke 16:19-31; 23:43, we have pictured total comfort and water in this prison because the rich man saw Lazarus afar off in comfort and bliss and asked him to dip his finger in water and cool his tongue (Luke 16:19-31).

This was the abode of the righteous souls from Adam after dying and leaving their bodies, being held captive by the devil against their wills till Christ's death and resurrection (Heb. 2:14-15; Eph. 4:7-11).Before Jesus Christ conqured the power of death and Hell, the devil had these powers. (Col. 2:14-17; Heb. 2:14-15; Rev. 1:18).

It was into this prison the repentant thief went with Christ the day they both died (Luke 23:43). This prison is located in the heart of the Earth as is clear from (Matt. 12:40 and Eph. 4:7-11).

Jesus not only went into this prison but He also went into another prison, "Tartarus," and preached to the fallen angels being held there in their own special prison, "And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day." (Jude 1:6). "For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;" (2 Peter 2:4).

Jesus having conqured Hell and death and the grave during His crucifiction and during the three days He was in the underworld, He captured all the righteous souls that were in Paradise and took them to Heaven when He ascended on high (Eph. 4:7-11).

Jesus now has the keys to Hell and death (Rev. 1:18).

When we check every Scripture provided in God's Word, we cannot believe Jesus did not go to Hell, preach to the SPIRITS there, and He also captured all the righteous souls, Abraham, Moses, Isac, David, and all the others rightious souls that were in Paradise and took them to Heaven when He ascended on high.

The five departments of Hell are;

One). Paradise, which we are speaking of here;

4:7-11). Before Jesus Christ conqured the power of death and Hell, the devil had these powers. (Col. 2:14-17; Heb. 2:14-15; Rev. 1:18).
It was into this prison the repentant thief went with Christ the day they both died (Luke 23:43). This prison is located in the heart of the Earth as is clear from Matt. 12:40 and Eph. 4:7-11. Jesus not only went into this prison but He also went into another prison, "Tartarus," and preached to the fallen angels being held there in their own special prison. 1:18). Rightious souls who die now no longer go here. They go straight to Heaven when they die.

Two). Tartarus; This prison is the special prison for the fallen angels that sinned both before and after the flood. There is nothing recorded in Scripture that teaches demons or human beings ever go into this prison. In these passages it is clear that there is a real Hell that is not the grave and that Spirit beings are confined in chains until judgment (1 Pet. 3:19; 2 Pet. 2:4; Jude 6-7).

Three). Hell itself; (Matt. 16:18; Luke 16:19-31). This is the torment part in the unseen world and was, still is, and will yet be the abode of all the wicked souls and spirits of men from Able to the end of the Millennium. Then, at this time all the wicked will be liberated out of this prison and will be given their own immortal bodies and be judged before being cast into the "lake of fire" forever (Rev. 20:11-15; 21:8).

Four). The Bottomless Pit or Abyss is the abode or prison of demons and certain angelic beings. No human being is ever thrown into the abyss. It is a very deep chasm in the lower parts of the Earth. It is translated "deep" (Luke 8:26-31; Romans 10:7) and "Bottomless Pit" in Rev. 9:1-3, 11; 11:7; 17:8; 20:1-10). All these Scriptures prove that there are prisons in the lower parts of the Earth for departed sinning spirits, and they are not and could never be the same as a grave on the surface of the Earth.

And Five). The Lake of Fire, is the eternal Hell and perdition of wicked men, demons, fallen angels, and all rebellious creatures of all ages who have ever rebelled against God, and who have refused to repent when they could have. It is called "The Gehenna of Fire" and is always translated Hell (Matt. 5:22, 29, 30; 10:28; 18:9; 23:15, 33; Mark 9:43-45, 47; Luke 12:5; James 3:6). This prison is also called "the second death, which is the lake of fire" (Rev. 2:11; 20:6, 14). This final Hell was prepared for the devil and all his angels (Matt. 25:41-46), and for all other rebells, and it is ETERNAL in duration (Rev. 14:9-14; 20:10-15; Isa. 66:22-24; Matt. 25:46). There is no record in Scripture of anyone being the lake of fire at present. Scripture does show that the beast and the false prophet will be the first to be cast into it. This will happen before the Millennium (Rev. 19:20). They will still be there 1,000 years later when the devil and all other rebels will be cast into it (Rev. 20:10-15).

Scripture also teaches that there will be degrees of punishment in Hell as far as remorse and torment of the conscience is concerned (Matt. 10:15; 11:22; 12:41; 23:14; Mark 6:11; 12:40; Luke 10:14; 11:31, 32; 20:47).

These degrees of punishment will be because of the kind of sins committed by one that were not committed by another. No man will be punished or could have remorse over something he did not do. They will all regret rebelling against God and man and failing to believe in Jesus, and repenting of sin.

God will never ever be in Hell. Hell was created for the devil and his angels.

Mat 25:41, Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
In the near future men on Earth will be able to look into a real burning Hell under the Earth.

This is plainly stated in Isa. 66:22-24 where the prophet predicts that all natural men in the New earth will be able to look into Hell upon the men that have sinned against God. We will definitely not be seeing God there.

Rev. 14:9-11 also proves that men will be tormented in the presence of God and angels forever. These passages are literal and should be understood just as they are written.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________

All sins are not equal. As I wrote in a previous post there will be degrees of punishment in Hell,

PLUS, Jesus taught that it will be more tolerable for some in the day of judgment than for others (Matt. 11:20-24); that some would be found to be twofold more a child of Hell than others, and will receive greater damnation, (Matt. 23:14-15); and that every man will be judged according to his works (Matt. 10:41-42; 16:27; Rom. 14:10-12; 2 Cor. 5:10-11; Rev. 22:12).

The degrees of punishment will be the result of God's judgment, as the degrees of reward will be the result of the judgment of the saints at the judgment seat of Christ (Matt. 7:2; 10:15; 11:22-24; 12:41-45; 23:12-14; Mark 6:11; Luke 10:14; 11:31, 32; Rev. 20:11-15).

Hell, as far as torment of fire is concerned, will be alike for all the lost, as much as Heaven, as far as bliss and comfort is concerned, will be alike for all the redeemed.

The degrees of punishment will come through the torment of the conscience and the inward self over the deeds committed, which will eat more deeply into the innermost being as the ages come and go into the eternal future.

This is just the opposite of the rewards for the saints, which will be ever increasing in glory and splendour as the ages come and go into all eternity. The judgment passed upon each individual will be eternal.

Paradise has nothing to do with Hades or hell. It is the place the believers went to before Jesus was crucified on the cross. Jesus then took these souls to heaven with Him when he visited paradise after He was crucified.
