Australian and American soldiers fighting shoulder to shoulder in battles like the bombing of Darwin cemented an enduring bond between the nations, the prime minister says.

On the 75th anniversary of the Darwin raids on Sunday, Malcolm Turnbull reaffirmed the two nations' partnership following a rocky month with US President Donald Trump.

Mr Turnbull said Australia's nearly 70-year alliance with the US was forged by combined sacrifice in conflicts like World War II, and America had been a force for peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region ever since.

He said Mr Trump had committed to continuing a strong presence in the region that was likely to be enhanced.

"We have a strong ally in Washington," Mr Turnbull said.

"Here in Darwin and around the world our two nations continue to serve shoulder to shoulder."

He insists the government will consider on merit any US request to boost Australia's military commitment as the Trump administration prepares a new strategy for the Middle East fight against Islamic State.

Governor-General Sir Peter Cosgrove said Australia had supported the US in every significant conflict since World War I.

He paid tribute to the 88 sailors killed on the USS Peary in Darwin Harbour in 1942 when Japanese planes bombed the city in attacks more savage than Pearl Harbor.

It was the US Navy's greatest loss of life in Australian waters.

"Although overwhelmed by Japanese dive bombers, the Peary went down all guns blazing, her crew full of spirit and defiance, fighting and firing to the very end," Sir Peter said.

Relations between the two nations hit a low point this month when Mr Trump said on Twitter that a planned refugee swap was a "dumb deal".

That followed an acrimonious telephone call between the two leaders that attracted worldwide headlines.

But Sir Peter stressed the two countries' shared values, mutual respect and affinity would secure a lasting friendship.

"The USS Peary is testament to our bond and the sacrifice that comes with it," he said.

"Because when our nation, our sovereignty, was under direct attack, the men of the USS Peary, our allies, were by our side."

Sir Peter, Mr Turnbull and Opposition Leader Bill Shorten laid wreaths at the ceremony alongside US Charge d'Affaires James Carouso, Japanese Ambassador Sumio Kusaka and NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner.

Mr Gunner said Darwin was a symbol of those close ties, where US Marines live and train with Aussie troops half of the year.

"The servicemen and women of the United States and Australia have fought and died side by side for a century," he said.

"I know our friendship will endure for centuries more."
