How do we show honor?

My Bible Study was going through Romans 12 this week, and something came up that I've been seriously meditating on. As I was teaching through verses 9-21, verse 10 really stood out to me. In the ESV it says "Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor." Now since then I've been thinking about honoring others and what that looks like. I understand honoring God, the 5th Commandment says to honor our parents, or 1 Timothy when it tells us to honor elders; but I find myself thinking "how am I showing honor"?

Am I honoring others with the same ferver that I seek to honor God or my parents?
What about the way I am honoring civilian authorities?
Does the way I show honor to others give glory to God?
Does the way I show honor reap an eternal reward?

What kind of ways do you show honor to others?

Well respect? To find out a meaning behind words, before you judge? Not to prejudge? Be kind and loving. Forgiving. Fair. Slow to anger. Helpful. Thoughtful. Sharing. All that.

How do we show honor?

1. Give them a compliment

2. Help them with a problem

3. Take a personal interest in them.

4. Pray for them.

5. Be thoughtful. Take food to them in times of need.

6. Give them a gift of something that they have an interest in.

7. Give them good Biblical Christian advice

8. Be there for them in times of trouble.

So, how do you honor parents that are abusive. That keep on abusing you to the point you must have low contact?

And if you barely talk to them

When all you get, is abuse, that ever comes out of their mouths its hard.

Were talking people that are narcissists with psychopathic traits if not psychopaths. You can be one and not be criminal, just very very very evil towards you, doing all to make you suffer.

You pray for them. You respond to them in a Christian manner and then you keep your distance. We are not a door mat.

I agree ... this is what I've had to do.  I had to create very strong and strict boundaries, not only for myself but for my children.  But I still pray/ed for them (my father passed away, mother still living) and I was/am respectful in conversation, witness/ed to them, send gifts, am generally kind and never spoke/speak harshly to them.  I truly love them... but I cannot be close to them.  When my father was dying, the Lord made a way that I could go and visit, help care for him, witness to him, and pray with him.  I was able to see the fruits of many years of prayer as my father changed in his last months of life and accepted Jesus. I prayed for him since I was saved at age 13 (1986) ... he came to Christ almost 20 years later... in 2005. Never underestimate the power of forgiveness, prayer, and waiting on the Lord.

People should bring the best out in us not the worst.

What kind of ways do you show honor to others?

To recognize them at their best and to never be afraid to hurt them for their own benefit, s in telling them something about themselves that may be keeping them from being who they want to be.  Respect and dignity are some of the watchwords in honoring someone, so you shouldn't be so brash as to chastise a person in front of anyone. A good idea is to praise in public and chastise in private, so they can ponder your words without the fear of others discussing them behind their backs. The main thing is not being afraid of telling them the truth about themselves in a tactful way, because if you do you will be subscribing to the ideal of political correctness and that benefits you instead of the person you claim to be honoring.
