Pope Francis has warned in an interview with a German newspaper of the dangers of rising populism in western democracies.

The pope told Die Zeit on Thursday “populism is evil and ends badly as the past century showed.”

He also said he rejects any kind of cult around the papacy and that he's a normal believer just like everyone else.

Francis said that, “I don't see myself as anything special... I'm a sinner, I'm fallible.”

In the first major interview that Francis has given a German newspaper, the pope was asked whether he experienced moments in which he doubted the existence of God. He responded: “I, too, know moments of emptiness.”

But, he pointed out periods of crisis are also a chance to grow, saying a believer who doesn't experience that remains “infantile.”

POPE:  Populism = bad; World government = good.  Got it!

I wonder if he's read the back of The Book?

Blessings,

I thought our form of government was to slow down populist uprisings in debate and discussion because populism rule just leads to mob mentality and that is not a good thing at all. BLM wants justice, is their form of justice justice? That's what our societies government is to take into their hands and not allow a movement to dictate foundational norms. We don't want the left to have control nor do we want the right to dictate either but rather rational, realistic debate and discussion over time to fully understand the valitity of a situation.

That's the divisional downward spiral of the United States. Populism is not the solution.

We jump to the right so fast and I'm not convinced it's always a christian thing to do. Is the Pope right about history? Or do we just slam on the man because it's a evangelical right wing populist thing to do?

If you are addressing me , don't call me an evangelical right wing thank you.  I was an Anglican for the majority of my life - as far as can be from evangelical right. My response about the Pope comes from studying what he has been saying since he got in. I'm interested in FACTS and reality not heritage, culture or group opinions.

"WE".  Reread.

What did your first comment have to do with populism and what the Pope was saying and you didn't answer a question. Not that you have to because you slammed on the man and didn't address his statement anyway. Extract evangelical then and reread.

Our system of government - if it were working properly - provides a system of 'checks and balances'.  If one entity becomes too powerful, there are two others to slow it down or halt it altogether.  That's the way in theory it is supposed to work.

In practice, we have nothing of the sort.

For all the endless election cycles, there is no actual debate. Discussion consists of talking heads with agendas talking past each other.

With all due respect to the Pope, he seems to know little of the United States or our form of government.  The divisional downward spiral of the US began a long time ago.  I would suggest it began when the law of the land, the Constitution, was for all intents and purposes declared 'null and void'.  One may argue as to exactly when it happened, but clearly we've had the 'rule of men, not law' for many years now.

And the pope may not have even been addressing the situation in the US (we do seem to be US centric and tend to think everyone else is as well).  The headline (linking it to Trump) was from the AP. I'll say no more about that.  The pope did not mention Trump (at least in the body of the article which I posted)

Not being Roman Catholic, I tend to think the pope and the religion he is head of is at best spiritually misguided. That is not to say however there have not been popes whom I've admired or that I believe have done good works.

John Paul II for an example was a good man, in my opinion.  He was instrumental in fighting the evils of Soviet Communism and in bringing down the iron curtain.

I personally wouldn't dream of 'slamming' the current pope, but given what I DO know about him and his public statements and actions, I would not trust his version of 'history'.

Had he been pope in the 80s (instead of John Paul), I'm not sure he would have been on the same side.

Blessings,

-Ed

No apologies here- call it whatever tickles your fancy,  I don't feel the need to specifically address it , the Pope's theme and agenda is quite consistent- this is just one of a long list of "" that this  UN loving, socialist,  no borders,  anti-western values, anti-nations,  Christ criticizing, misrepresenting Jesus teachings Pope pushes. Where the  Bible believing Christians go that is the opposite of where the Pope and the New World Order will be.;)

Right right right right right, but is what he said about populism correct?

Sure.  And the moon is made of green cheese. The Pope should shut up and mind his own business which is pedophilia in the RCC.

Totally false, but self-serving.  Pope Francis is working on behalf of the globalists, not even the Catholic Church.  Conservative Catholics are fed up with his political activism.

No. The pope pushes a social justice gospel. That is all he is interested in.
