Why do some denominations/churches prohibit dancing? I never understood that one.

For religious reasons, self righteousness.  Dancing can be found in scripture, so to say it is wrong goes against scripture.  I can see how some dancing can be seen as wrong, but not dancing in general.

The Bible doesn't address dancing. Inappropriate dancing is a sin.

Yes it does.

Psalm 149:3 Let them praise his name with dancing and make music to him with timbrel and harp.

Psalm 150:4 Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.

Dance is used as an act of worship in Scripture

David did some dancing before the Lord. The scholars would have to see if the interpretation and translation is appropriate.   I know some pentecostal church may include a dance item in its church program for that day as a worship item.  Baptist on the other hand forbid it totally in  the church.  Outside the church, dance without the vulgarity , can be merry to the heart.  I am not a dancer as such, but like to shake my legs to a decent tune, why not.

2 Samuel 6King James Version (KJV)

14 And David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.

15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lordwith shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.

16 And as the ark of the Lord came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart.

Nothing wrong with dancing as unto the Lord :)

He's turned my mourning
Into dancing again
He's lifted my sorrows
I can't stay silent
I must sing
For His joy has come

:emot-dance:

Psalm 149:3

Let them praise His name with dancing and make music to Him with timbrel and harp.:emot-heartbeat:

Yes, dancing in the Bible but not dancing that is done in our world today.

Do you know the song from Carmen?

Now's the time to celebrate when the Lord's your choice
Now's the time to celebrate and make a joyful noise
Now's the time to celebrate when the Lord's your choice
Now's the time to celebrate and make a joyful noise

Here is the jam going cross the land
And a jam that I think you know
It's a groove on the move and a groove you've heard from the Word called the 1-5-0

Now this book called Psalms may look all calm
But it's anything y'all, but mild
It's all about praise when the big band plays
And it makes the saints go wild

Bring the glory down with the trumpet sound
Let the tambourine kick, too
With the harp and the lyre everyone can hear
How the praise of the Lord will come through

The strings, the bass, the cymbals clash
And the people clap their hands
The spirit's right and with all their might
Everyone starts to dance

Let the people sing, let the people dance
Let the people sing, lifting holy hands
Let the people sing, let the people dance
Let the people sing, lifting holy hands

Well, I'll be 70 in May, just to give you a time frame; when I was growing up it was said that dancing would lead to the desire for sexual activity and that is why several of the denominations of that time period did not want young people to dance.

Also the dance halls where adults went to dance were kind of wild and served alcohol which kind of lowers ones inhibitions to do things that we would not normally do.
