In a world-first a New Zealand river has been granted the same legal rights as a human being.

After 140 years of negotiation, Māori tribe wins recognition for Whanganui river, meaning it must be treated as a living entity.

No more peeing in the river! finally

Actually when it comes to taking care of waterways it makes sense. But it will be interesting to see how a person is handled that they believe is abusing the river and what will bring the hammer down.

Does the river actually have the same rights as a human being or just a living entity?

Fundamental

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15 (English Standard Version)

Rights

"But ask the animals, now, and they shall teach you; the birds of the sky, and they shall tell you. Or speak to the earth, and it shall teach you. The fish of the sea shall declare to you. Who doesn't know that in all these, the hand of the LORD has done this, in whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind? Job 12:7-10 (New Heart English Bible)

I think it is a call to keep it clean, treat it with respect, for it sustains life (fish, marron etc) -

hmm if it is now a living person/entity does it have to pay tax and insurance  ? Does it mean it can be owned and sold like other living entities such as dos/cats/horses etc ?  Sounds to me as if this opens up a whole new can or worms :D

If a real human being fell into that river and drowns, can the river be charged with murder? If one takes a nude swim in the river can one be charged with sexual assault? Its another sign that the world going crazy that's all.
