(Worthy News) - U.S. House Republicans are working on changes to their healthcare overhaul bill to provide more generous tax credits for older Americans and add a work requirement for the Medicaid program for the poor, House Speaker Paul Ryan said on Sunday.

Ryan said Republican leaders still planned to bring the healthcare bill to a vote on the House of Representatives floor on Thursday. Speaking on the "Fox News Sunday" television program, he added that leaders were working to address concerns that had been raised by rank-and-file Republicans to the legislation.

Republicans remain deeply divided over the healthcare overhaul, which is President Donald Trump's first major legislative initiative. It aims to fulfill his campaign pledge to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, popularly known as Obamacare, the healthcare program of his Democratic predecessor, Barack Obama. [ Source ]

Convenient that this neglects to mention the higher premiums that come with these changes.

It was Obamacare that gave us deductibles that ranged from $5000 -$12,000 a year.   According to Obama and his amen corner that was "affordable" health insurance.

Well, regardless of what you think of Obamacare, we're about to see the situation get worse.

Without a doubt, but that has been part of the plan from day one. The only way to get the country to accept a single payer system is to break the current system beyond repair.  What Obama started, Trump and the Repubs will finish.

No we are not.    Anything will be an improvement over Obamacare.  The liberal legacy of the last 8 years is being dismantled piece by piece.  And that is good for America as liberalism has been a plague on our country during that time.

I am talking about premiums, and yes, given these changes, we are going to see the average insurance premium rise. Since the individual mandate was repealed, we'll likely see more young and healthy Americans drop their healthcare coverage, which means rates will rise for the remaining insured people. The changes also allow insurers to charge more for the elderly (the maximum age band rating ratio was increased from 3:1 to 5:1, though it could vary by state), so they'll be among those most affected.

The GOP has gotten bullied and beat up for 8 years.  They are so battered, and they so what to be in with the In Crowd that they are going to try and out-Democrat the Democrats.  They are scared to death of the backlash that simply repealing the ACA would cause, so they are going to replace it with their own plan.  And that plan is going to be twice as bad as the one we have now.

I didn't realize the GOP had such a victim complex. Oh wait, actually I did. They're the ones who promised to repeal and replace, and they've had years to come up with a replacement. The downsides that come with the AHCA are their fault.

Speaking of premiums going up... according to the CBO..

A 64-year-old making $26,500 would be paying $1,700 for coverage in 2026 under Obamacare, thanks to its subsidies. But under the GOP plan, his annual premium would be $14,600 since its tax credit would not offset as much of the cost.

I know a family on the bronze plan.   $5000 a year in deductibles and for the four of them, AFTER subsidies, the premiums were $1,000 a month.    They made around $30,000 a year or so.   That's $17,000 a year on$30000 a year budget. Like 2/3 of their income.

There is going to be a lot more choice, though.   There will be competition and 90 year olds will  not be forced to pay for prenatal care.   What's going to happen is that you will be able to choose the coverage you want, and not what the government says you have to have.   There won't be a one-size fits all health care plan.

The elderly were already being taken to the cleaners by Obama, being forced to pay for healthcare they didn't need and couldn't use.  That is going to stop with this plan.

And I will also add that having health insurance doesn't guarantee healthcare.   If you cannot pay the deductible, then you can't use the insurance and you're paying out of pocket, any way even though you have health insurance.

It is also important to note that all we have is phase one of the plan and a rough draft that is still being worked on.   We have not seen the finished product.   So a lot of the criticisms it is getting are pretty much unfounded at this point.
