Luke 21:25-28

King James Version (KJV)

25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

Just as the siege of Jerusalem was a sign that the time of her judgement had arrived, so cosmic upheavals (or political convulsions) will herald the Day of Judgement for the whole world. Unbelievers will be terrified and bewildered, unable to explain the phenomena that they witness, yet aware that something terrible is about to happen. But Christians will know what is going on: that Jesus is about to return, as He has promised. (Acts 1:11)

It will be very different to His first coming. Then He was disguised in weakness and humility; but at His second coming He will be revealed in all His awesome majesty, as Lord and Judge. But we shall have nothing to fear. Jesus’ return is something that we look forward to with confidence and joy, because it will mean our final liberation from the power of sin and death.
