I agree that Man is a Spirit and that the body without the spirit is dead (James 2:26). But people understand it wrongly. The body could actually be alive without the spirit. There is a life force in the body. Leviticus 17:11- For the life of the flesh is in the blood... I used to understand it wrongly before. Also I think JohnD is right about God knowing children who would accept Jesus when they grow up. God knows the future.

That's like a bulb working without electricity. Notice man didn't become alive until God breathed life (His spirit) into him..

Gen 2:7 Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath (neshamah) of life, and the man became a living being.

John 3:8 The wind (pneuma) blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit (pneuma)."

neshamah in Hebrew is actually translated "breath" in Gen 2:7, and pneuma in Greek which is translated "breath" is described as "spirit" in John 3:8.

body + spirit = living soul

That's not a correct analogy. A bulb doesn't have a spirit.

Just now, Heb 13:8 said:

body + spirit = living soul

correct.

Hebrews 4       King James Version (KJV)

12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

I didn't say the body and the spirit doesn't equal the living soul. What I was saying is that comparison can not be made between an electric bulb and a human being. An electric bulb is purely physical while a human being is a spirit, has a soul and lives in a body.

Lev. 17:11 is talking about animals, not humans.  We could never be alive without a spirit.  That is one thing that separates us from the animal kingdom.

No body can be alive with out a spirit

It is the spirit that continues regardless of the physical body .... no doubt

Heb 13:8, your analogy can't be applied in this case. An electric bulb and a human being are two very very different things.

Yowm, surely John's body wasn't dead while he was IN THE SPIRIT receiving the book of Revelation. The brain can survive only about 6 minutes without oxygen. John's body lived on while he was in the spirit receiving the vision.
