How does a bill sponsor defend the cowardice of killing a sleeping bear and her cubs? I'll make my voice heard too. This is absurd.

Why is killing bears allowed?

Kangaroos are killed in Australia but their meat is edible and sold in supermarkets?

What happens to a grizzly after it has been shot and photographed?

*this is a serious question BTW.

I don't know if it is packaged and sold in grocery stores in Alaska. But it is edible and homesteaders and others that live in the wilds sort of speak do eat bear meat.

This proposal is so wrong in so many ways.

Alaska is a frontier. There are more bears than humans. It is a different way of life than you are used to.

I thought the wild frontier days were over.

I also didn't know that folk ate grizzly bear meat - so that's new to me.

I thought hunting bear in 2017 was just for "sport" and to hang on the wall but if the Indigenous  peoples are eating bear meat, that I understand...

but to shoot hibernating bears , that just speaks of unfairness to me.

Life isnt fair to start with.

From wikipedia:

Alaska contains about 98% of the U.S. brown bear population and 70% of the total North American population. An estimated 30,000 brown bears live in Alaska. Of that number, about 1,450 are harvested by hunters yearly.

In alaska, in many parts the only way to get around is by bush plane, seaplane, or boat. Folks are often hours away from any first aid. It is not a typical tamed country. There are cities like anchorage and fairbanks, but it is mostly isolated communities or homesteads. It is a frontier state. Its not a bit of woods to go camping in over the weekend. Its a wild frontier that one needs to be careful in.

I think the headline is slightly mis-leading as to what exactly is going on.

As I understand the article, the proposal rescinds a recent federal restriction put in place in August of 2016. What will happen then is things will go back to the way they were previously.

States - particularly frontier states like Alaska - are much better equipped and more knowledgeable about their own wildlife situations than bureaucrats in DC.

As a smaller government, states' rights 'small L' libertarian, I completely concur with it.

Blessings,

-Ed

This is 100% correct.  Put the power back with the state for an issue that does not affect any other states.

Unfair as in they are defenseless if they are hibernating as opposed to being alert and able to defend themselves.

To be truthful, even if the bear is hibernating, if you don't kill the bear with the first shot, you will be in a world of hurt.  Bears are big but they are fast and kill a human in a few seconds and an injured bear is far worse to deal with.    And if you accidentally wake the bear before getting your shot off, heaven help you 'cause it will not end well for you.

I understand Shiloh.

It just doesn't seem right to hunt a hibernating animal.
