For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand."Ephesians 6:11-13 Welcome to Worthy Richard Just before Jesus comes back , the world will be so sinful and wicked and Jesus is asking if He will find real faith when He returns to earth. If you look around now you will see that evil is called good and good is called evil , many people will turn away from the truth and will compromise Gods word to their own liking and sinful ways of living. You make the comment: " Jesus is asking if He will find real faith when He returns." Given that Jesus could return at any time, your are insinuating that people professing to be Christians are under some illusion for they are not following the true faith. That is a lot of people! First, the woman with the issue of blood had faith that if she could touch the hem of his garment, she would be healed. She pressed forward in a crowd of people around Jesus and touched the hem of his garment....AND WAS HEALED!!! More than that, Jesus stopped immediately and asked who touched Him. He felt the virtue leave His body!!! He was amazed at her faith. Second, the Syro-Phoenician woman who told Jesus even the dogs ate crumbs from the Master's plate. Jesus had told her He was only sent to heal the Jews. She had faith enough to believe for a crumb of healing. Jesus healed her son as a result. Again, Jesus marveled that He had not found such faith in Israel. So when Jesus wondered if He would find faith at His return, it is much more than a rhetorical question, it is a real question. As others have stated, in some places there is not much faith left in "the church". Certainly there are some denominations that have "allowed", "voted on", " been complicit" with gay marriage and other blasphemies, but even in the staunchly fundamental sects, there has been a blurring of the clear cut directives in the Word of God. This is not meant to be a specific rebuke, but those who study the Word and try to comply with it daily know what I am speaking of. Blessings. He came to tell the Truth about the gospel of the Kingdom of God. That he asked questions is consistent with how he taught. For example, "Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?" That was for the benefit of his disciples, their understanding. The statement of Jesus was, of course, in response to the Gentile centurion showing a faith that Jesus did not need to enter his house to heal his servant, his word was sufficient. In John's record, Jesus says that the Father seeks people to worship Him in spirit and in truth. I believe Jesus was referring to the lack of that purity of spirit and truth that he taught at the time of his return.

There's definitely a big problem with secularism having invaded the modern church. So many people's faith is so thin today; people go to church because it's just what they've always done, how they were raised, because it makes them feel good, etc. Jesus makes it clear that true repentance, the kind that leads to real change of focus and lifestyle, is what saves. If he were to return now, yet, I think a lot of people would be surprised when He tells them they never knew Him. (Matthew 7:21-23)

Returning to the original question: will he find (the) faith on the earth? you make a very valid point that people will claim to be his followers on his appearance but his response is to reject them. Why? Because they did not worship the Father in spirit and truth (John 4). We can add the wedding guest episode - Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? (Mat.22) So, the household of faith in spirit and truth. Where is it right now and where will Jesus find it when he returns? That could be before this day has ended!
