I know a huge number of veterans. I grieve a few who never made it home. I'll choose not to pay attention to garbage that tells me I must be ashamed to be a free American and celebrate INDEPENDENCE DAY one day in a year, when every single day I thank God I'm an American.

Hows that?

God Bless America!
And God deal with all enemies who come against us. Even in print.

The article dated June 28th 2016...I was starting to wonder.

I would have said for the past 5 decades...but I get the Obama connection lol.

And yet there is this in the body of that OP article. I bolded what I'm referring to.  "....I’d like to challenge you patriots this year (and every year hereafter) to begin referring to this holiday by its correct name; “Independence Day.”  "

Sorry, I thought the saying was both obvious and thought provoking.

Here's more background:  The idiom expresses gratitude for the service of members of the military, implicitly stating that the freedoms enjoyed by many citizens in many democracies are only possible through the risks taken and sacrifices made by those in the military, drafted or not. The saying is often used to convey respect specifically to those who have given their lives in defense of freedom.  Richard B. Cotten was a conservative broadcaster and commentator. He would close the program with his tradmark saying, "Freedom is not free; Free men are not equal, and Equal men are not free".

I, as well as thousands of Americans, celebrate America's Independence on July 4. Always have, always will. No one will ever change that.

The Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. They'd been working on it for a couple of days after the draft was submitted on July 2nd and finally agreed on all of the edits and changes.

July 4, 1776, became the date that was included on the Declaration of Independence, and the fancy handwritten copy that was signed in August (the copy now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) It’s also the date that was printed on the Dunlap Broadsides, the original printed copies of the Declaration that were circulated throughout the new nation. So when people thought of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776 was the date they remembered.

  Great addition to this thread.

I love your profile picture by the way. Very lovely.

There were more than a few who never made it home. There have been thousands of troops who never were able to walk on American soil after they left for deployment.

Thank you. My profile picture is my youngest daughter, Jacie Lynne. She was a member here until she was killed in a car accident on April 19 of this year. She was 24 years old.

I wish people would stop telling me what to do.

People go out of their way to find things to spend their time worrying about.   I still remember being in boot camp for the 4th of July, which is what they called the basewide celebration even 28 years ago, and we got to "watch" the fireworks.  We all had to sit crosslegged on the parade deck and had to clap on command something like "clap now"..."stop".

:( I'm terribly sorry for your loss. I had no idea. She was a lovely young woman. :emot-hug:
