(Worthy News) - The first known attempt at creating genetically modified human embryos in the United States has been carried out by a team of researchers in Portland, Oregon, Technology Review has learned.

The effort, led by Shoukhrat Mitalipov of Oregon Health and Science University, involved changing the DNA of a large number of one-cell embryos with the gene-editing technique CRISPR, according to people familiar with the scientific results.

Some critics say germline experiments could open the floodgates to a brave new world of “designer babies” engineered with genetic enhancements—a prospect bitterly opposed by a range of religious organizations, civil society groups, and biotech companies.

The U.S. intelligence community last year called CRISPR a potential "weapon of mass destruction.” [ Source:MIT Technology Review (Read More...) ]

The Lord will not be mocked...and this is mockery of His creation.

It's science, so it could be used for good or bad things.  The first article I read about this talked about fixing specific, known defects.  If this helps a couple have a healthy, normal baby where they would otherwise not much of a chance of that, that sounds good.   If it's used to make sure children have blue eyes or blonde hair, that will be an interesting market.  When they start trying to use genetic engineering to add athletic abilities, height, or intelligence, that will really be interesting but I suspect that's many decades away.

DARPA is already working on it.  Creating super military members.....  both physically superior and intelligent.

As I said earlier, this is making a mockery of God's creation.
