Which tribes did not enter the promised land?

According to Joshua the twelve tribes did enter the promised land.

Joshua 3:12, Now therefore take you twelve men out of the tribes of Israel,, out of every tribe a man.

Joshua 4:8, And the children of Israel did so as Joshua commanded, and took up twelve stones out of the midst of Jordan, as the LORD spake unto Joshua, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, and carried them over with them unto the place where they lodged, and laid them down there.

They all may have entered but Reuben and Gad settled on the other side of the Jordan according to Numbers 32.

  • Now therefore, apportion this land for an inheritance to the nine tribes and the half-tribe of Manasseh.”  With the other half-tribe, the Reubenites and the Gadites received their inheritance which Moses gave them beyond the Jordan to the east, just as Moses the servant of the Lord gave to them.  Joshua 13:7-8

As I understand it, all the tribes engaged in the conquest of the promised land but Reuben and Gad settled in land that was on the other side of the Jordan.

What portion of land did Rueben and Gad relinquish? As I understand it, they occupied the land that God gave to them... as Promised.

I don't think they relinquished any land.  What's your take on Numbers 32?  Seems to me like they requested the land that was located before they crossed the Jordan.  Doesn't that still fall within the bounds of the land promised to Abraham's descendants?  Genesis 15:18

But they left their families there while they went into the land an fought to help the other tribes conquer their lands.

Num 32:16  Then they came near to him and said, "We will build sheepfolds here for our livestock, and cities for our little ones,

Num 32:17  but we will take up arms, ready to go before the people of Israel, until we have brought them to their place. And our little ones shall live in the fortified cities because of the inhabitants of the land.

Num 32:18  We will not return to our homes until each of the people of Israel has gained his inheritance.

Num 32:19  For we will not inherit with them on the other side of the Jordan and beyond, because our inheritance has come to us on this side of the Jordan to the east."
