• "Now concerning...our being gathered together to Him...that day will not come, unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed.." (2 Thessalonians 2:1,3)

• "Now concerning the tribulation of the persecution which is to fall upon the Church from the adversary..the tyrant is to reign and persecute the Church.." (Hippolytus)

• “..that the beast Antichrist with his false prophet may wage war on the Church of God.” (Terullian)

• “the kingdom of Antichrist shall fiercely, though for a short time, assail the Church" (Augustine)

• “God will allow persecution from the Antichrist not because He cannot stop it, but because He desires, as usual, His strugglers to be crowned....the reverent ones among the living will be taken up into the clouds, receiving, as a reward of honor, that which is higher than any man.” (Cyril of Jerusalem)

• “Nor let any one wonder that we are harassed with increasing afflictions, when the Lord before predicted that these things would happen in the last times, Nor let any one of you, beloved brethren, be so terrified by the fear of future persecution, or the coming of the threatening Antichrist, as not to be found armed for all things by the evangelical exhortations and precepts, and by the heavenly warnings. Antichrist is coming… but immediately the Lord follows to avenge our sufferings and our wounds. (Cyprian)

* "He shall harass the word with an intolerable rule; shall mingle things divine and human; shall contrive things impious to relate, and detestable" (Lactantius)

* "And there is therefore in this beast, when he comes, a recapitulation made of all sorts of iniquity and of every deceit, in order that all apostate power, flowing into and being shut up in him, may be sent into the furnace of fire...since he sums up in his own person all the commixture of wickedness which took place previous to the deluge, due to the apostasy of the angels." (Irenaeus)

• "He shall sit in the Temple of God as if he were Christ, and leading astray those who worship him." ( Irenaeus)

• "Watch for your life's sake. Let not your lamps be quenched, nor your loins unloosed; but be ready, for you know not the hour in which our Lord will come. But come together often, seeking the things which are befitting to your souls: for the whole time of your faith will not profit you, if you are not made perfect in the last time. For in the last days false prophets and corrupters shall be multiplied, and the sheep shall be turned into wolves, and love shall be turned into hate; for when lawlessness increases, they shall hate and persecute and betray one another, and then shall appear the world-deceiver as Son of God, and shall do signs and wonders, and the earth shall be delivered into his hands, and he shall do iniquitous things which have never yet come to pass since the beginning. Then shall the creation of men come into the fire of trial, and many shall be made to stumble and shall perish; but those who endure in their faith shall be saved from under the curse itself. And then shall appear the signs of the truth: first, the sign of an outspreading in heaven, then the sign of the sound of the trumpet. And third, the resurrection of the dead -- yet not of all, but as it is said: "The Lord shall come and all His saints with Him." Then shall the world see the Lord coming upon the clouds of heaven." (The Didache/ Teaching of the Twelve Apostles, chapter 16)

• "....the resurrection of the just, which takes place after the coming of Antichrist, and the destruction of all nations under his rule; in [the times of] which [resurrection] the righteous shall reign in the earth, waxing stronger by the sight of the Lord: and through Him they shall become accustomed to partake in the glory of God the Father, and shall enjoy in the kingdom intercourse and communion with the holy angels, and union with spiritual beings; and those whom the Lord shall find in the flesh, awaiting Him from heaven, and who have suffered tribulation, as well as escaped the hands of the Wicked one." (Irenaeus)

Hi, Marylin (and thank you for the warm welcome).

My hope in sharing these quotes is that it might be a blessing for saints to see an early church perpective, and how it differs from much of modern end times theology regarding the church and the antichrist (as well as the timing of our meeting the Lord in the air).

It is amazing to see how the early Christians fully expected to be on earth during the time of the antichrist and the false prophet...they encouraged eachother to strengthen themselves in the Lord and be prepared.

Blessings!

Interesting quotes there.

I think that having an aversion to being persecuted for our faith comes from our (western) culture.  However, our religious freedoms are now being compromised and challenged in an ever increasing way.  We aren't greater than our master.  If the world hated Him, they will hate us too.  In the world we will have tribulation, but be of good cheer.  Jesus has overcome the world!  Strengthen the things that remain and persevere.

From my own lengthy study of the Ante- (and Post-) Nicene fathers, I came to understand that their opinions were no more reliable and authoritative than those of latter-day teachers. These verses have been cherry-picked out of a body of many others of their teachings that most here would know to be false.

Of all the quotes above, note that the earliest, from the Didache, mentions neither Antichrist nor Beast. This is wisdom.

This is a stern warning that we should be careful to heed.

That was actually a quote from Follow the Lamb that I quoted.

The early church fathers scripts are quite revealing. Sometimes including points that have been glossed over by later authorities. If I recall correctly, when fierce debate was held about including Revelations in the cannon, it was Polycarp, a friend of John's that swung the vote in favor of The Revelations. There was much debate over some of the other books as well.

Thank you FTL.
