Hi all, I just get this e-mail from Duke energy You do the math and figure the potential consequences on the whole of  "the Grid" .perhaps we all need to be in Hurricane ready mode.

What does the solar eclipse mean for solar power?

This unusual eclipse is a balancing act for energy companies

When the Great American Eclipse glides over the country on Aug. 21, the moon will block more than 90 percent of the Carolinas' sunshine. That much darkness presents a first-of-its-kind puzzle for the Duke Energy employees managing solar energy.

Solar energy production will dramatically decrease as demand for lighting increases in North Carolina while the sun hides behind the moon from about 1 to 3 p.m. This is normally a peak time for solar energy production, and Sammy Roberts, Duke Energy director of system operations, estimates solar energy output will drop from about 2,500 megawatts to 200 megawatts in 1 1/2 hours.

During the Aug. 21 eclipse, about 98 percent of sunlight will be blocked at Duke Energy's new 500-acre solar plant in Monroe, N.C.

This will be the United States’ first coast-to-coast solar eclipse since 1918 and the first to affect the solar energy supply in North Carolina. So, what does that mean for the grid?

Just as punching the gas pedal to climb a steep hill is tough on a car, dramatic shifts in energy supply or demand are challenging for the grid. But unlike a car, which has a gas tank, the grid doesn’t have an effective way to store large amounts of energy. Energy production must mirror customer demand at any moment.

System operators are constantly monitoring demand and making decisions about what source – natural gas, solar, nuclear, hydropower, coal, wind, etc.– is the most efficient for that moment.

Because of its flexibility, operators will have natural gas plants ready to step in during the eclipse. In addition to replacing the lost energy with a flexible fuel source, operators can gradually decrease solar production before the sky darkens depending on weather conditions, Roberts said, which would allow them to slowly increase natural gas energy production. In other words, they will gently press rather than punch the gas pedal.

North Carolina might not be the first state that comes to mind when you hear solar, but it is home to more solar power than any state except for California. On a sunny day, North Carolina’s panels can produce enough energy to power nearly 600,000 homes.

Duke Energy manages energy from more than three quarters of the roughly 3,200 megawatts of solar power in North Carolina, but because it has a diverse mix of energy sources and a plan in place, Roberts said the company expects to meet customer demand during the eclipse.

A look at where the eclipse will shade Duke Energy's solar plants.

In California, which has nearly six times as much solar as North Carolina, system operators anticipate losing about 6,000 megawatts during the eclipse. According to the California ISO, operators have a similar strategy to replace the lost energy with natural gas and hydropower.

But energy companies are not the only ones planning for the big day. Hotels and viewing events in the eclipse’s path of totality -- where the sun will be fully blocked – are sold out. The country’s last total solar eclipse in 1979 only passed through five states, but 2017’s will hover over 14.

As the third largest city in the path of totality, Columbia, S.C., considers itself the Total Eclipse Capital of the East Coast. Columbia is hosting more than 50 events as part of its Total Eclipse Weekend Aug. 18-21. Viewers, according to the event website, will experience the longest period of totality for a metro area on the East Coast for up to 2 minutes and 36 seconds of complete darkness.

Duke Energy’s Oconee Nuclear Station in nearby Seneca, S.C., is also in the path of totality and has hosted a series of educational events that ends with an eclipse viewing party on its lawn. The World of Energy will have eclipse viewing glasses (NASA said the glasses are necessary), so that you’re prepared for this once-in-a-lifetime event, too.

Not near the World of Energy? No worries. NASA will live stream the eclipse and has gathered a list of places to watch across the country.

Many States if not all have a legal limitation on pricing for rooms at motels and hotels and any temporary lodging facility, plus several have a law that says a hotel can never be out of their minimum advertised price room. They must provide a room at their lowest advertised price if there is a vacancy anywhere in the facility.

The sign on the inside of the entry door to every room explains the limits of what can be charged for that room. a typical notice reads as this one from California:

(a) Every keeper of a hotel, inn, boardinghouse or lodginghouse, shall post in a conspicuous place in the office or public room, and in every bedroom of said hotel, boardinghouse, inn, or lodginghouse, a printed copy of this section, and a statement of rate or range of rates by the day for lodging.

(b) No charge or sum shall be collected or received for any greater sum than is specified in subdivision (a). For any violation of this subdivision, the offender shall forfeit to the injured party one hundred dollars ($100) or three times the amount of the sum charged in excess of what he is entitled to, whichever is greater. There shall be no forfeiture under this subdivision unless notice be given of the overcharge to such keeper within 30 days after payment of such charges and such keeper shall fail or refuse to make proper adjustment of such overcharge.

So rumor or fact? I don't know, but I kinda have  doubt that many will risk losing their business over rate gouging, for the civil law attornies will have a field day with it if it happens.

I don't know about other states but it's obviously not illegal where I'm at....nor should it be. Market should define the rates, not the government, that's socialism to the max. In fact I'd dare call it communism.

You can of course come to Casper Wyoming and walk into a hotel and try the above line. I suspect you will be told where the door is, and at $1600 a night the hotel is likely going to be able to afford a better lawyer then you. And, once they say that 1600 is their lowest advertised price (the keyword in your little snippet) you will be stuck with the court costs for losing your case, as well. :)

Its a great time for people watching. Except for the ones who have decided to walk around without clothes.

I've heard that sets you free.

Actually, The State of Wyoming has at least 33 pages of regulation on just the taxing  and sales taxes on items sold or given away by  Hotels/motels and other short term rental units. The funniest one to me leads to the following;- you can't just give away the toilet paper in a complimentary room. The operator of the facility  must charge the sales tax for the paper used. So much for free wheeling non government involvement spirit at Wyoming.

Excerpt from code:

"When a lodging establishment offers a room on a complimentary basis, or without receiving anything in exchange for the lodging service, the establishment must self-assess and remit Wyoming sales tax on the cost associated with the disposable and consumable items placed in the room. This is true because the lodging establishment was permitted to purchase these items on a wholesale for resale basis. It was then anticipated that tax on these items would be collected and remitted through the sales price paid by a patron receiving lodging services. However the lodging establishment is not receiving taxable consideration for the lodging service provided in this situation. Therefore these items removed from an untaxed inventory become taxable to the establishment"

BUT you are right Wyoming is not on the list of 34 States and the District of Columbia that have  all evidently gone communist by having laws pertaining to decent business practices, each of the 34 having antigouging statutes.

Oh gosh, maybe my Lord was a communist too?

For the Bible does promote that it is improper to take advantage of a neighbor and goes so far as to say carry the extra load as demanded by  a soldier or authority as testimony of the joy of being a soldier of Christ Jesus. Nowhere do I see any instruction from my Lord that says it is the freer spirit that gouges when opportunity presents itself.

Personally I don't think I'll be buying into any free  spirit of; when opportunity knocks, plunder!

But hey that is just me.

Question; I will like to learn more of Wyoming!  Please share of some of it's attributes that you especially enjoy.

Now I wonder though, can  a communistic  Christian like myself visit there?

All of this excitement and the large number of people the eclipse is attracting just makes me want to go back home to Canada and sit in the quiet on my parents' deck away from noise and people.

I miss the country and being somewhere where I could actually think and enjoy nature.

Again the stray thought regarding charity versus gouging opportunity:

Going all biblical here so  warning odd biblical stuff coming-

Were the apostles taught; gather the fish and the loaves into the basket, reduce the supply and then  jack up the price of provisions so high you won't need another sheikel to be raised for months on end. all said this in the spirit of fully free enterprise.

Oh and water; never gave a cup of cool water to anyone  for free not ever, for you can bottle the stuff and at big events charge outrageous prices for it. was that a teaching?

------------

Anyway back to the event itself, the eclipse; may it be that all will arrive at destinations and also return home safely, and have good photos selfies to mark the event. May the electric grid not fail and may the port a potties be ample.

I agree with you.  But didn't Paul also say that when they were traveling through a town they did work and what not so they wouldn't be a hindrance to anyone?
