My wife wants to home school, but it puts a financial strain on our finances.  I understand that the public school system can hinder our effectiveness as Christian parents, but it is tough living paycheck to paycheck.

Our daughter in law homeschooled.  But she was not consistent in making sure the kids completed assignments.  Some subjects such as science and math have changed a lot.  We don't always have the needed equipment like chemicals and microscopes.  The best of both worlds is when a local school system fills in some of those classes with a qualified teacher to help explain it.   Our son has taken advanced college math.  He could work the problem of middle school basic 6th grade math but couldn't teach how to do it.  The advantage is that you can choose curriculum.   Some state's school systems don't teach as much bigotry as ours or do as much brainwashing, so it really depends on the state.

You might check to see if other curriculums are cheeper online.  Sometimes you can buy them second hand as well, or pass them on to younger children.  Our area has a group of parents that homeschool and help out each other some.  We also have a reasonably priced church run k-12 school that offers scholarships.  They do fund raisers to help defray tuition as well.
