Historically, an eclipse was considered to be a bad omen. For example:

"With the eclipse, which may be felt most by the U.S.—much of the country will be directly beneath its path—Miller says, 'they say ‘a king leaves his position.’ It could be for any reason. It could be, I don’t feel like being a royal anymore. Or, I don’t feel like being a president anymore. Or illness, like the Pope: I don’t think I can do this.' For any reason, there may be a vacant space in authority...."

I don't know if there is already a thread on this but...what was your eclipse experience?

I am sitting here and instead of 10:22am is it like 8:30pm. It definitely has gotten darker. It is not totally dark.

Well, it was an experience! I didn't get any glasses to look at the eclipse, but watched all around for its effects here in the country. It didn't get near totally dark here near Nashville, TN., but it was sure strange, and if you didn't know an eclipse was causing it, your head would be raw from scratching it. By observing, I found it fascinating the curve ball thrown at nature for those few minutes.

Outside watching and experiencing this eclipse, I was wondering what people might have been thinking back in the day, those that experienced it and had no idea of what an eclipse was? If today, we didn't know the cause, effect and timing, what would we be thinking? I'm thinking the Bible mentions some of those experiences and thoughts of the ancient peoples in various passages.

Forgot to mention I was in the 90% plus band. The temperature dropped from 95 degrees to 88 degrees in just a very few minutes according to my weather station.

I wonder if a lot of people are going to experience solar retinopathy?

Good question. We still have 2 pair of those extremely dark sunglasses you get after cataract surgery. I doubled them up to try and take a gander. I only took a very brief glimpse, but I'm here to tell ya it was nowhere close enough to look directly at the sun. Makes you realize just how bright that star actually is.

When I was a teen  several of us saw something orange in the sky, we were told it was Venus. Dont know if it was. I cant imagine Venus shining like a star if it is a planet. And still we should be able to see moon in sky as I have many times before in day time.

I was thinking the same thing. I looked several times this morning for the moon to see which way it was coming and never saw it?

We're in Tyler Tx and I didn't bring my good camera.  Phone had an interesting lenses flare that shows the coverage here.  It's on my phone so I'll have to post it later.

I thought it was weird that the eclipse went from West to East but apparently a solar eclipse always goes from West the East.

Cool, oo!  We lived in Tyler for awhile when I was little.  Do you go there often?  They used to have the best Mexican restaurant.... not sure if it's still there... Mercados ... not sure I spelled it right... we loved that place!

My daughter lives there.
