Why Americans love doomsday prophecies

Why Americans love doomsday prophecies

From Washington Post:

Quote

Here we are again. News reports are abuzz with a “Christian numerologist” suggesting that Sept. 23, 2017, is the fixed date for the end of the world.

It could be, of course. Any day could be Judgment Day.

But there are a couple of reasons we should pay no attention to this prediction. The first reason is summed up in the words “Christian numerologist.” The second, and more important, reason is that this sort of doomsday speculation has little to do with religion and everything to do with marketing.

The first market for this sort of prophecy-as-publicity is outside the Christian church. One would be hard-pressed to find a church or a significant gathering of Christians who buy into the Sept. 23 date-setting. I couldn’t give you the name of one person who holds the view, and I keep up to date on some of the craziest religious movements in the country. Those without a great deal of familiarity with actual lived religion tend to find this sort of thing exotic and interesting, the way they might find interesting the end-is-near cultists on an episode of “The Leftovers.”

Beyond that, though, there is the very real problem with doomsday hucksterism within American religion. While it is hard to find a nameable proponent of Sept. 23 prophecy, one can watch various Christian television evangelists and talk-show hosts and find a more general, but just as frantic, message: that the world is ending soon.

The answer is we suppose to be excited about Return of Christ, "And now the prize awaits me--the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing," (2 Timothy 4:8), "Therefore be on the alert, for you do not know which day your Lord is coming. "But be sure of this, that if the head of the house had known at what time of the night the thief was coming, he would have been on the alert and would not have allowed his house to be broken into," (Matthew 24:42-43), and "The Kingdom of God can’t be detected by visible signs. 21 You won’t be able to say, ‘Here it is!’ or ‘It’s over there!’ For the Kingdom of God is already among you.”22 Then he said to his disciples, “The time is coming when you will long to see the day when the Son of Man returns, but you won’t see it. 23 People will tell you, ‘Look, there is the Son of Man,’ or ‘Here he is,’ but don’t go out and follow them. 24 For as the lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other, so it will be on the day when the Son of Man comes. 25 But first the Son of Man must suffer terribly and be rejected by this generation.
26 When the Son of Man returns, it will be like it was in Noah’s day. 27 In those days, the people enjoyed banquets and parties and weddings right up to the time Noah entered his boat and the flood came and destroyed them all.28 And the world will be as it was in the days of Lot. People went about their daily business—eating and drinking, buying and selling, farming and building 29 until the morning Lot left Sodom. Then fire and burning sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 Yes, it will be ‘business as usual’ right up to the day when the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day a person out on the deck of a roof must not go down into the house to pack. A person out in the field must not return home. 32 Remember what happened to Lot’s wife! 33 If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it. 34 That night two people will be asleep in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. 35 Two women will be grinding flour together at the mill; one will be taken, the other left.”
37 “Where will this happen, Lord?” the disciples asked. Jesus replied, “Just as the gathering of vultures shows there is a carcass nearby, so these signs indicate that the end is near.” (Luke 17:1-37). It is this zeal often gets people tangled up in prophecies of ordinary men.

The Apostle Peter gives the best reason for Christ's delay,

"Most importantly, I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created. They deliberately forget that God made the heavens long ago by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. Then he used the water to destroy the ancient world with a mighty flood. And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed.  But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. 10 But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise, and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire, and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment. 11 Since everything around us is going to be destroyed like this, what holy and godly lives you should live, 12 looking forward to the day of God and hurrying it along. On that day, he will set the heavens on fire, and the elements will melt away in the flames. 13 But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness. 14 And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight15 And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him— 16 speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction." (2 Peter 3:3-16).

The point is to be vigilant, but not to be disappointed if doomsday prophecy isn't fulfilled; because it means Christ is delaying.

Yeah,   Me'n Hal Lindsey showed everyone that he should have been here in 1988.   Can't figure why he's so late.....

Somehow these doomsday predicators and 'prophets' forget this simple verse, "But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only." (Mathew 24:36). Hmm.. Jesus doesn't even know, and yet we are suppose to? Uh.. ding! Hubris! Ding! Hubris!

There is no credibility of those who have the dooms day prophecy and they are mocking God and His plan He has for this earth. The secular world is laughing. Jesus Christ will come back in His timing.

When you see the leaves green up you know summer is neigh and that generation that sees that will see the return of the Lord.    We don't know the day and the hour, but the season we should know.....

That's just it, these doomsday prophets don't stick to seasons, they predict the hour, day, and year.

Hi all

St Paul felt the tug of heaven but felt it was better for the church if he remained for a time.  I want to be with Jesus too - but I see around me so much need; so much deception, so much confusion.  Even though we see the signs, we should not be tempted to try and work out the hour and the day - just trust that it will happen, in His time!  It is now 2.46pm, 23/9/17 in Western Australia.  We will see!

Which picked the day and hour?    Even this one, the sign is in the sky for the better part of two days.....    problem with this one is that the scripture with it, to give it context, has nothing to do with the end of the world or Jesus's return.  it seems to me that pointing that out would be better than throwing the whole subject out.   .

"We don't know the day and the hour, but the season we should know"

No one will know .... not even the season which could be any time

The Lord will immortalize His own when He is ready .... no one knows when
