John and Charles Wesley were two brothers in the 18th century who had major mark on Christian History. Sons of Susanna Wesley, John and Charles both were trained rigorously in the Bible and God's Law. When they became older, both John and Charles went to college and started a club on campus that observed practices of hours of prayer, scripture reading, and strict spiritual disciplines. Because of heir ascetic practices, John and Charles' club became known on campus as "The Methodists" which would be foundations for the Methodist Church which is 30-60 Million strong. John and Charles then perceiving they should take the evangelion (Gospel) to the Americas, set sail for Northern America. Their success was minimal, and because of scandal, Charles Wesley left for England, and John soon followed, nearly perishing on a ship in a storm. John on the turbulent seas discovered a sect of Christians known as Moravian Brethren, and from studies with them discovered Salvation by Grace (Ephesians 2:8-9). From there John became involved in the First Great Awakening, going to farmers in the fields and preaching the gospel. Charles in maintime was creating hymns (thousands) and the two brothers led Europe into revival. Later in life John Wesley's passion turned back to Angelican Church, his hopes like Luther late in life was to reform it.

Welcome to Wesley Brothers! Feel free to talk about their influence, long journey through three church systems, and all the took place around their lives.

And how will they proclaim unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of peace, who bring good news of good things." Romans 10:15 (New Heart English Bible)

Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. 2 Timothy 3:12

Papal Persecutions

Thus far our history of persecution has been confined principally to the pagan world. We come now to a period when persecution, under the guise of Christianity, committed more enormities than ever disgraced the annals of paganism. Disregarding the maxims and the spirit of the Gospel, the papal Church, arming herself with the power of the sword, vexed the Church of God and wasted it for several centuries, a period most appropriately termed in history, the “dark ages.” The kings of the earth, gave their power to the “Beast,” and submitted to be trodden on by the miserable vermin that often filled the papal chair, as in the case of Henry, emperor of Germany. The storm of papal persecution first burst upon the Waldenses in France. http://www.worthychristianlibrary.com/john-foxe/foxes-book-martyrs/chapter-4/

To be fair there were Protestants who were guilty of killing Catholics and even other Protestants. The Anabaptists were heavily persecuted by other Protestants. Now That is some Irony right there:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anabaptism

Amen Beloved
You Are Spot On

Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. Psalms 71:4

My friend, Mike Bentley, an Evangelical Baptist, was once jailed in Greece for passing out pamphlets which detailed New Testament verses describing how to receive Jesus as Savior, in Greek. When his release was secured (it was not easy but Michael had a “friend,” a Christian, who had a “friend”...), he told the Greek police, “It was only Christian literature.” They told him, “Don’t ever do that again.” Apparently, the Orthodox fear the real Jesus of the New Testament; otherwise, such anti-missionary laws would not exist.

Michael’s high-ranking friend told him, “If I had not insisted, they would have thrown the key away and no one would have ever known what had happened to you.” So much for the Greek Orthodox “monopoly” on what is Christian. It speaks for itself. In our opinion, it is a head philosophy of investigation and ceremony, rather than a secure faith of the heart based on Jesus and the New Testament! http://ramsheadpress.com/messiah/ch10.html

Love, Your Brother Joe

I doubt very seriously that the "Authorities" that put him in jail were devout "Orthodox Christians". I have a hard time imagining some sweet old granny trying to get someone put into jail over passing out pamphlets about Jesus Christ.

It's sickening to think about what "Supposed" Christians have done to other Christians in history. I just think to my self, "Man, were any of these people even real Christians back in the day ? "

The Wesley brothers topic was good reading, however, as a new person to this website and subtopic, I'm disappointed in such judgmental attitudes and writings rather than responses being educational or informative.

You mean Bloody Mary, The Inquisitions and The St. Bartholomew Day Massacre? Feel free to start a topic on them but let us remember Protestants have done The English Civil War (Oliver Cromwell), The Salem Witch Trials, and Papist purges.

To quote a song by King & Country, “O/ O/ God forgive us..”
