The USA federal government has in the past made holding of gold illegal and has confiscated it. It also has a history of fixing it's value, at one time to $35 an once, not allowing it to "float". Sooo, what is the value of Gold in a crisis. It is a medium of exchange on the black markets of the world. It is also "pretty", individuals like it. When those C 131's were bringing into Los Alamitos Naval Air Station the refugees from Vietnam planeload after planeload, there was suddenly a lot of gold around the area. Little chips of gold became common jewelry in the area. And suddenly whole areas became literally "Little Vietnam" with many places of enterprise opening up, start ups funded in part I suspect from trade of an illegal tender.
