Probably strengthened from G5420; a signet (as fencing in or protecting from misappropriation); by implication the stamp impressed (as a mark of privacy, or genuineness), literally or figuratively: - seal.

To preserve, place in your mind or whats going to happen.   

Rev 5:9 And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;

The Lamb of God is the only one worthy to open the seals of God to you and put them into your mind.

Rev 6:1  And I saw when the Lamb opened one of the seals, and I heard, as it were the noise of thunder, one of the four beasts saying, Come and see.

(Gods Voice is as thunder), Psalms 77:18.

Come and see,  look.
Rev 6:2  And I saw, and behold a white horse: and he that sat on him had a bow; and a crown was given unto him: and he went forth conquering, and to conquer.

Horses are symbolic of powers, this one represents religion.

He has a crown to rule, and he went forth conquering, and to conquer

So what is it talking about?   False Religion is what this horse represents.

Note: the seals in Revelation are not in chronological order.  But they are in Luke 21, Mark 13 and Matthew 24.

Mat 24:3  And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

3 questions were asked. 

 Mat 24:4  And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

Man will deceive you prove out all things.

Mat 24:5  For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Did it say a few ? No many will come claiming to be Christ.

Even the that man of sin the son of perdition which is Antichrist.

2Th 2:3  Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away(apostasy) first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

2Th 2:4  Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

So the first seal is False religion.
