Here is how I see the timeline concerning the end of Satan's six millennia stint as governor, along with the reasoning as to why.

timeline00.jpg

The time segments given in scripture are 1260 days, 1290 days, and 1335 days.  The 30 and 45 days are derived from the differences in those segments.  Daniel 12 describes all three of the segments.  That chapter begins by talking about a time of great distress, such that has never occurred before.  And at that time, Daniel's people who are found written in the book will be rescued.  The duration of the events of the great distress is given in verse 7.

  • I heard the man dressed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, as he raised his right hand and his left toward heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever that it would be for a time, times, and half a time; and as soon as they finish shattering the power of the holy people, all these events will be completed.  Daniel 12:7

A time, times, and half a time is a way of saying 3.5 years which is the same as 42 months of 30 days or 1260 days.  Comparing Revelation 12:6 with 12:14 will bear that out.  Daniel 12:7 states that the time of great distress lasts 1260 days and ends when the power of the holy people is shattered.  This time of great distress is caused by the man of sin who is given authority over the saints during that time.

  • He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time.  Daniel 7:25
  • There was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him.  Revelation 13:5

The time of great distress comes to an end with the shattering of the power of the holy people.  I believe this is a reference to the death of the two witnesses since they are invincible as they confront the man of sin and bringing distress to him and his followers in the form of plagues.  They are allowed to be killed only after they have finished their ministry which also runs for 1260 days.

  • And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for twelve hundred and sixty days, clothed in sackcloth.”   Revelation 11:3

In summary, the 1260 days of great distress is comprised of the man of sin's persecution of believers and the plagues brought against him and his followers by the two witnesses.  This is represented by the blue section marked with B.  It's end point is when the two witnesses are killed.

Going back to Daniel 12, we see that there are two more time durations given.  The first is in verse 11.

  • From the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days.  Daniel 12:11

Since the topic of Daniel 12 is the time of great distress, it is assumed that its end is also the implied end of this statement.  In other words, from the time the sacrifice is abolished and the abomination is set up until the death of the two witnesses, there will be 1290 days.  This is consistent with what Jesus taught in Matthew 24 where He associated a time of great tribulation with the abomination of desolation.  This means that the abomination of desolation will be set up 30 days prior to the beginning of the time of great distress.  This is the yellow section marked with A.

The last time duration in Daniel 12 is in verse 12.

  • How blessed is he who keeps waiting and attains to the 1,335 days!  Daniel 12:12

This is a continuation of the 1290 days that were mentioned in the previous verse.  That means that there are 45 days that extend beyond the time of great distress.  Those who keep waiting, and do so until the end, will be blessed.  This same idea is conveyed by Jesus as the armies are being gathered together at Armageddon.

  • “Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.”  Revelation 16:15

This is speaking of the return of Jesus on the day of the Lord.  Those who remain faithful until the 1335th day, when He returns, are blessed.  I've divided the 45 day extension into three parts marked C, D, and E.  C represents four days.  After the two witnesses are killed, their bodies are put on display in Jerusalem.  On the fourth day after their death, God brings them back to life and lifts them up into heaven.  This is obviously cause for great concern so the call goes out for all the kings of the earth to gather their armies to Armageddon.  This takes place in the 40 days after the two witnesses were caught up to heaven.  After those 40 days have lapsed, the 45th and final day is when Jesus returns.  It is what is referred to as the day of the Lord which brings about a change in governance of the earth.  The wicked will be destroyed along with Satan's kingdom.  Satan will be cast into the abyss and Jesus will rule the nations for 1000 years.  The day of the Lord is marked with E.

Some people associate a 2300 or 1150 day period and a seven-year period with end time events as well.  I’m not going to include them here since they are debatable concerning having a future fulfillment and omitting them doesn't detract from the overall chronology.

I say 30 days for all the vast armies to die at Armageddon. The 45 days for the birds of the air to eat the flesh of men and horses. All follow the 70th week. Then the 2nd Coming.

The text in Daniel 12 seems to suggest otherwise given the mention of two separate events and time frames for each, namely 1)the shattering of the power of the holy people (death of two witnesses) and 2) the AoD being set up.  Not going to argue over it though.

timeline01.jpg

This is how I see the seals lining up with the timeline, along with a brief explanation of why and what takes place during each seal.

The first seal was opened after the gospel was preached to all the nations completing the times of the nations, or gentiles.  When it was opened, the evil angel beast was released from the abyss and began implementing the plan that would lead to the man of sin’s rise to become world dictator.  The conditions we see around us in the world today haven’t come about by happenstance.  They have come about over the past several decades through the influence of spiritual wickedness in high places.  The reason I place it circa 1900 is that about that time, we saw the emergence of things that today have matured into things of prophetic significance.  These things include the apparition of Fatima (UFO sightings), the roots of globalism (League of Nations), and the increase of knowledge in many areas.  Most importantly I think is the assault on truth that has taken place through the emphasis of evolution, humanism, etc. that has led to the godless world view that’s prominent today.  When these things have sufficiently matured, the man of sin will be revealed, something that begins in earnest with the second seal.

The second seal begins a time of war.  This is what Jesus refers to as the time of wars and rumors of war.  Included in these wars is the destruction of the world’s capital by the ten leaders, and the subsequent destruction of three of those leaders by the man of sin.  People will think that it’s the end of the world, but Jesus says that the end is not at this time.

The third seal describes a time of severe food shortage.  This is typical during war time but is exacerbated by the heavy concentration of population in the cities.  Perhaps God made a special mention of this condition so that we might be prepared ahead of time and use this inevitability as an opportunity for ministry.

The fourth seal describes the end of the wars, and their consequences.  One-quarter of the world’s population, or roughly 2 billion people at this point, will have died because of the wars and their resulting effects.  The wars are brought to an end by the man of sin through his displays of supernatural power.  No one can wage war against him.  After deceiving the world by the signs and wonders he performs, he declares himself to be God.  That event is the abomination that leads to desolation and begins the 1335 day time segment.

The fifth seal describes a time of martyrdom, a time when many believers refuse to worship the man of sin and are killed.  After the abomination of declaring himself to be deity, he calls on the deceived people of the world to affirm his declaration.  Having been to the edge of global destruction, they are only too willing to do so.  They perceive him as a savior and collaborate on a code of conduct that affirms his deity and requires compliance with its terms.  This is known as the image of the beast.  The behind-the-scenes activities of the evil angel beast led to the man of sin’s dominion which is likewise revealed and affirmed in this code of conduct.  The man of sin gives life to this image by making it law and those who don’t comply with its terms are to be killed.  This begins the time of great tribulation.  The great tribulation starts at the beginning of the man of sin’s 1260 days, when he declares the image to be law.  He expedites compliance with the image through the commerce system that he hijacked from the ten leaders by requiring that everyone receive his mark in order to buy or sell anything.  The thirty days from the time of his abomination until the beginning of the great tribulation is when people are receiving his mark and collaborating on the image.  It’s a grace period of sorts until compliance becomes mandatory under the penalty of death.

The time of great tribulation continues until the sixth seal is opened.  No time duration is given for it but if it were allowed to continue for the full 1260 days, no flesh would be saved.  The opening of the sixth seal, when the sign of the Son of Man appears in the sky, does something to inhibit the man of sin’s ability to enforce the “worship or die” ultimatum.  The 1260 days are not shortened.  It’s the intensity of his persecution that is cut short, effectively ending the time of great tribulation, and changing it to tribulation for the remainder of the 1260 days.  Estimates of the duration of the great tribulation range from 40 days to six months, sufficient time for everyone to have decided whether they will accept the mark of the beast and worship his image or not.  We simply don’t know how many days it will last.

When the seventh seal is opened, the time of the seven plagues begins and fills out the remainder of the 1335 days.

timeline02.jpg

The opening of the seventh seal begins the time of the seven plagues.  Each plague has a beginning point and an ending point which is expressed as a trumpet sounding and a bowl being poured out respectively.  The trumpets are sounded in sequence and the bowls are poured out in sequence, however, one plague does not necessarily have to finish before the next one starts.  The exceptions to this are the fifth and sixth plagues, which are referred to as “woes.”  Those two plagues each run their course before the next one begins.  The seventh plague is the day of the Lord when the wicked are destroyed and Jesus returns to establish the kingdom of God on earth.

The plagues begin after everyone has decided whether or not to worship the man of sin.  They only affect those who choose to receive the benefits of his mark (buying & selling) and comply with (worship) the image.  The purpose of the plagues is to convict those people that they have been deceived and should repent of their idolatry.  The initial plagues are phased in, beginning as a fraction of what they will become, which is consistent with corrective discipline.  There will come a time when people refuse to repent, but that is not until very late in the progression of the plagues, just before the two witnesses are killed.  Near the end of the plagues is when God’s wrath, contained in the seven bowls, is poured out.

The first four plagues affect creation.  God is demonstrating His power over His creation in contrast to the man of sin’s impotence to do anything about it.  These four plagues account for the majority of the time of the seven plagues.  The fifth plague (first woe) is the only one that is given a time duration, which is five months.  It is completed just days before the death of the two witnesses at the end of the 1260 days.  The sixth plague (second woe) immediately follows the fifth and only lasts a few days because at that time, the conditions are so oppressive with no fresh water and intense heat that a person couldn't survive longer.  During the sixth plague, the two witnesses are killed which brings immediate relief from the oppressive conditions.

  • Those from the peoples and tribes and tongues and nations will look at their dead bodies for three and a half days, and will not permit their dead bodies to be laid in a tomb.  And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate; and they will send gifts to one another, because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.  Revelation 11:9-10

But on the fourth day after their death, those people who were celebrating have a problem.

  • But after the three and a half days, the breath of life from God came into them, and they stood on their feet; and great fear fell upon those who were watching them.  And they heard a loud voice from heaven saying to them, “Come up here.” Then they went up into heaven in the cloud, and their enemies watched them.  Revelation 11:11-12

Will there be more plagues in retaliation?  Are they preparing to invade?  The man of sin responds to this development by convincing the kings of the world to gather their armies at Armageddon.  And for the next 40 days, that’s what takes place.  Also during the 40 days, those who responded to the conviction of the plagues and repented are having the sincerity of their repentance tested now that the effects of the plagues have subsided.  It’s during these 40 days that Jesus says the following:

  • “Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.”  Revelation 16:15

After the 40 days, the seventh plague takes place and completes the 1335 day period.  The seventh trumpet sounds and begins the day of the Lord.  Jesus descends to the clouds and sounds the last trumpet, the trumpet of God.

  • Then the Lord will appear over them, and His arrow will go forth like lightning; and the Lord God will blow the trumpet, and will march in the storm winds of the south.  Zechariah 9:14

The kingdom of Satan is destroyed along with the ungodly, and the seventh plague is completed in one day.  The millennial reign of Christ begins and His kingdom fills the earth.

Hi LD.

If the beast is to set up the AoD in the Jerusalem temple, wouldn’t he have to conquer the city first? Presumably defending Jerusalem would be the Jews’ last stand. So shouldn’t its fall amount to and coincide with the ‘shattering of the power of the holy people’?

Hello ghtan.

I think the man of sin seizes power by intrigue through the manifestation of supernatural signs and wonders.  He does uproot three of the ten leaders using (supernatural) force, but I see that as defensive and part of the intrigue.  Going back to Daniel 12, "shattering the power of the holy people" brings an end to the time of trouble.  Its only a short time after that that Jesus returns.  That's what I base it on.

Hi again,

I suppose it is theoretically possible for the beast to set up the AoD by intrigue but I don’t see any occasion in history where the Jews have been tricked into letting that happen. I think the desecration of the temple by a foreigner has always resulted from force instead.

As for Daniel 12, I doubt the short time between the death of the two witnesses and Armageddon is important enough to warrant God setting separate prophetic dates, especially as the two witnesses are nowhere hinted at in Daniel.

Anyway, just my opinion.

Yes, Jerusalem and the holy people, that is: the Christians, are conquered by the Anti-Christ. Zechariah 14:1-2 describes it.  Also Daniel 11:33. Those who refused to agree with the AC's peace treaty, Daniel 9:27, are the faithful ones who will be taken to a place of safety for the 1260 days of the Great Tribulation, Revelation 12:14  The rest must remain in the holy Land, where they will face persecution. Rev 12:17

According to the above, those who remain in the holy land must have agreed to the AC's peace treaty; why then are they persecuted?
