If a person falls back to their old sins and way of life were they ever genuinely saved to begin with?

That is true we are all sinners but.... a born again Christian has a daily relationship with Jesus Christ. They will have the Holy Spirit within them to guide and direct them in the ways of God. They do not deliberately thumb their nose at God and what He means to them.

speaking from personal experience. and observations it's very easy   for a Christian to fall back into a past sin and s nightmare to struggle  back out. backsliding  is a very present reality. it is possible to ignore the holy spirit. noe staying in tjsgbstate and notbwanting to leave is another  question

Born again Christians are a new creation. A Christian should be a new life. A Christian should live a progressively more holy life as they grow closer to Christ. A true Christian who falls back is still saved. A person who lives a life controlled by sin is not truly a Christian.

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free,
and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Drinking is a sin?  Really?  Being a drunk or drinking so much it affects your life and family I'd agree is a sin.  Drinking at a celebration such a wedding now and then is a sin?  No.
