If thou doest well, - shalt thou not be accepted?
.. and
if thou doest not well, - sin lieth at the door.
.... And unto thee shall be his desire,
...... and thou shalt rule over him.’

(Gen 4:7)

* In the Hebrew emphasis is put on the word 'if' and 'well', to mark the solemn alternative.
At the entrance to the door lay ,a ‘sin offering,’ as in Exodus 30:10, but Cain chose not to use it.  (see also, 2 Cor. 5:21  Eph. 5:2)
