And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself at the river;

and when she saw the ark among the flags,

she sent her maid to fetch it.

And when she had opened it,

and behold, the babe wept.

And she had compassion on him, and said,

"This is one of the Hebrews' children."

"Shall I go and call to thee a nurse of the Hebrew women,

that she may nurse the child for thee?"

And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go."

And the maid went and called the child's mother.

And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her,

"Take this child away, and nurse it for me,

and I will give thee thy wages."

And the woman took the child, and nursed it.

And the child grew,

and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter,

and he became her son.

And she called his name Moses:

and she said, "Because I drew him out of the water."

Exodus 2:11-14 

Moses Flees to Midian

11 One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. 12 Looking this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, “Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?”

14 The man said, “Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and thought, “What I did must have become known.”

'Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, 
.. he sought to slay Moses. 
.... But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, 
...... and dwelt in the land of Midian: 
........ and he sat down by a well.
Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters:

.... and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.

........ but Moses stood up and helped them,

And when they came to Reuel their father, 
.. he said, "How is it that ye are come so soon to day?"
.... they said, "An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, 
...... and also drew water enough for us, and watered the flock."
And he said unto his daughters, "And where is he? 
.. why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread."
And Moses was content to dwell with the man: 
.. and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.
.... And she bare him a son, 
...... and he called his name Gershom: 
........ for he said, "I have been a stranger in a strange land."'

God Hears Israel's Groaning

And it came to pass in process of time,

that the king of Egypt died:

and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage,

and they cried,

and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage.

And God heard their groaning,

and God remembered his covenant

with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

And God looked upon the children of Israel

and God had respect unto them. Exodus 2:23-25

The Burning Bush

Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law,

the priest of Midian:

and he led the flock to the backside of the desert,

and came to the mountain of God,

even to Horeb.

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him

in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush:

and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire,

and the bush was not consumed.

And Moses said, "I will now turn aside,

and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt."

And Moses hid his face;

and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters;

for I know their sorrows;

And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians,

and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large,

unto a land flowing with milk and honey;

unto the place of the Canaanites,

and the Hittites,

and the Amorites,

and the Perizzites,

and the Hivites,

and the Jebusites.

Now therefore, behold, the cry of the children of Israel is come unto me:

and I have also seen the oppression wherewith the Egyptians oppress them.

Come now therefore, and I will send thee unto Pharaoh, that thou mayest bring forth my people the children of Israel out of Egypt."
