James was talking about how our works affirm our testimony in the sight of men. He was not saying that belief alone is not enough in terms of trusting faith in Christ. We are saved by grace through faith alone in Christ alone. Many people believe Jesus and God are real. They will assent to what the Bible says about Jesus and even agree that Jesus is the Son of God, but they fail to trust him for salvation. We can agree that we are NOT saved by following rituals; but by believing what God has said about his son and what we must do to be saved. Hebrews is talking about faith ( believing ). The people mentioned in Hebrews 11 were commended because they believed in the coming savior. They were justified by faith. As for following the sabbath; the first 4 commandments have to do with our relationship and attitude towards God, and the rest have to do with how we deal with each other. Neither can be practiced apart, for in doing one, you also do the other. They are intertwined. In John 13 Jesus set an example of how we love one another by serving one another, in affect we are serving and loving him. Matthew 25: 40 Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. As to the opster's question. . . Just knowing who Jesus is … is not enough, for then we must go on to fully believing what he has done for us on the cross and fully trusting him to do as he has promised. That if we fully believe in our heart's that he is the way, the truth and the life we are assured of eternal life. The Holy spirit assures us in our hearts that righteousness and deliverance from judgment is available through Gods' son. John 16 : 8 – 9 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment: about sin, because people do not believe in me; Righteousness is available NOT because of anything we have done to earn it through good works, for it can not be earned. There is nothing we can do on our own merits to get us to heaven. It is available because of God's goodness. That HE wants to save us from the coming judgment by providing a means of salvation through his son. John 14 : 6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. The truth of being set free is from sin and death while yet remaining in that place where sin and death yet reigns... truly this makes the walk hard and few that find it because it can only be walked in s/Spirit the flesh profits nothing! We, the believer, (if by disobedience) returns to the place of first birth, that of sin and death, and tries to walk according to what makes sense from that place God's Word cannot abide in them in this.... they are in the flesh! There are people that sincerely accepted Christ as their Lord and Savior, faithfully serve him, but still doubt they are saved. Satan loves to attack people by trying to get them to believe that they are too bad to save, aren't living good enough, even when they are doing their best, or that they committed the unpardonable sin. That is one issue. Another is that some were never really saved. There are people that believe in Jesus, but never got serious about turning away from sin to follow the Lord. They may have gone to an alter at some time in their life. There are many children that were dragged to the alter by their parents, and told they were saved, when they were not. There are adults that went through the motions of saying a prayer, but never intended to change their sinful lifestyle. The Bible says that even the devils believe in Jesus, but they are not saved. When you are dealing with something like this, it must be taken case by case. You can't say that everyone is in the same camp. You must sit down and have a one on one conversation with someone like that, and get to understand how they were saved, and why they think they are going to hell. Listen to them carefully before you jump to conclusions, because you could be dealing with someone who is saved but has a demon on his shoulder lying to him, or you may be dealing with someone that needs to get saved now, and you may have the opportunity to lead them to the Lord. As a general rule, if someone is doubting their salvation, I feel it is not a bad idea to have them confess their sins to God anew, and re-dedicate their life to Christ, just to make sure they are saved. Paul never taught Jesus + certain sacraments brings salvation. Paul never taught Jesus plus legalism brings salvation. Paul never taught Jesus + time in purgatory brings salvation. Paul never taught circumcision brings salvation. Paul taught only Jesus + nothing else brings salvation. We cannot do anything, or add anything to all Jesus, the Father and the Holy Spirit did to save mankind. The one I used to go to decided to lead people to the Lord in small groups instead, but it didn't happen.
