Check it out, Luke 14:

26 "If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.

What the? What does Jesus mean hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters? I'm lost!

This was a commonly used figure-of-speech, sort of laying down a comparison between the intensity of your love for Jesus and the intensity of your love for your family.

This sort of extreme language was not meant to be taken in that rigorous literal sense of actually hating one's own family, but rather illustrating the sense of 'love them less than Me'.

exactly,

that is why we can not build a doctrine on the bassis of one verse....

we also have to remember that Jesus told us that if we hate our brother, how can we love Him..... how can you hate something that you can see and love something you can not see. how can you say you love God and hate His creation.

so forth and so one.

we have to know what the culture, the style of writing, the meaning the author was trying to get across when we study the Bible.

Exactly, thats what i was trying to say on another subject which i wont get into, but you also have to make Doctrine Language which it was written in, and have MANY verses to back you up.

Actually the Hebrew is even more difficult in that regard.

But the usage of 'hate' is the same in both Old Testament and New. Jesus was basing His speech on the Old Testament. Remember the passage says: "Jacob have I loved and Esau have I hated"? Well obviously God did not HATE Esau! God blessed Esau!

Jacob 'loved' Rachel, but 'hated' Leah. Again, it is clear he didn't hate Leah, but he preferred Rachel.

Even in Latin the word is a bit harsh. The mild Latin usage would still result in:

Grace to you,

I believe that Jesus meant what He said.

Hey Mike. Don't forget this verse:

1 Timothy 5:7-9

Give the people these instructions, too, so that no one may be open to blame. If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
