I'm lost! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> This was a commonly used figure-of-speech, sort of laying down a comparison between the intensity of your love for Jesus and the intensity of your love for your family. This sort of extreme language was not meant to be taken in that rigorous literal sense of actually hating one's own family, but rather illustrating the sense of 'love them less than Me'. But the usage of 'hate' is the same in both Old Testament and New. Jesus was basing His speech on the Old Testament. Remember the passage says: "Jacob have I loved and Esau have I hated"? Well obviously God did not HATE Esau! God blessed Esau! Jacob 'loved' Rachel, but 'hated' Leah. Again, it is clear he didn't hate Leah, but he preferred Rachel. Don't forget this verse: 1 Timothy 5:7-9 Give the people these instructions, too, so that no one may be open to blame. If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
