To be a true believer is requires that we humble ourselves before our Creator God and surrender our lives to Him as Savior and Lord.  We must choose between being a servant of sin or a servant of God.  But we can't serve God in our own strength.  We need His help to be able to follow Him and do His will.  So we ask Him to come into our lives to change us to be willing and able to do His will.  He gives us new attitudes so that we desire to be like Jesus, as well as the power of the Holy Spirit to enable us to follow Him.  Slowly our character changes to produce love, joy, peace, long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness and self-control.  That means less selfishness and more selflessness.

True humility and brokenness over one's sin leads to true repentance and a true desire to follow God.

Works are not required for salvation, but the are the fruit of it. True salvation invariably leads to works. To a desire to follow God's will and do for others, to reach out.
