Hi, guys. I just read one of an atheist answer when someone asked him to get know more about Jesus Christ. He answered that the story of Jesus Christ is similar with the story of Horus, god of sun, who was born 10 ages before Jesus. And, secondly, he stated that The Empire of Roman was taking note about everything that happened on that time, but then, the story of Jesus Christ on the cross wasnt on that Roman's note, instead they wrote about the chicken thief. I mean, The Empire of Roman wrote everything, even about the chicken thief, but why dont they write about Jesus Christ, the greatest man on that era? Thank you :)

PS: please answer my questions with facts (scientifically approved or maybe historicaly approved) + please attach any sources that support your critical answer :)

Hi, welcome to worthy. As it happens, Ive studied ancient egyptian myth. I studied it prior to becoming a Christian so there isnt a Christian bias to my views. I will post this in parts, because my answer is quite long. I can show that the main points going around the internet claiming that Jesus is based on horus is in fact just a hoax that is going around the internet.

1. Both were conceived of a virgin.

According to Egyptologists, the mythology of Isis/ Horus/ Osiris is clear that Isis restored the dead Osiris to life so that he could impregnate her. Hardly a virgin birth.

Achy (who originally came up with this idea of Horus having a virgin birth) explains his reasoning: "Isis is the constellation of Virgo the Virgin, as well as the Moon, which becomes a 'virgin' during when it is new. The sun god - in this case, Horus - is born of this Virgin goddess." This alludes to a document from the 6th century AD and not from the mythology of Horus. Egyptians did not have the same constellations we have today.

2. Both were the “only begotten son” of a god (either Osiris or Yahweh)

The phrase “only begotten son” is not used in Egyptian mythology. Being a sole child is hardly unusual in mythology of any kind. The earliest forms of the Horus myth claim that he is one of 5 children.

3. Horus’s mother was Meri, Jesus’s mother was Mary.

Horus’ mother is Isis. There is no such person/ god within Egyptian mythology with the name Meri. There is a goddess of song and rejoicing, a minor goddess, with the name Meret. She had no part in the story of Horus. The only place I found a name of Meri associated with Isis, or at all, is on atheist sites that have no backing to their claim of this name.

4. Horus’s foster father was called Jo-Seph, and Jesus’s foster father was Joseph.

Horus’ uncle was called Set or Seth. No one has ever used the name Seph or Jo-seph. Another false construct.

5. Both foster fathers were of royal descent.

Most gods of Egypt have royal descent. The pharaohs were considered gods themselves. This is not unique to Horus.

6. Both were born in a cave (although sometimes Jesus is said to have been born in a stable).

Jesus was not born in a cave. Horus was born in the reeds, on a floating island of reeds in the swamps of Khemnis in the Nile Delta, rather than in a cave.

7. Both had their coming announced to their mother by an angel.

No angel announced the birth to Isis. No anything announced the birth to Isis.

8. Horus; birth was heralded by the star Sirius (the morning star). Jesus had his birth heralded by a star in the East (the sun rises in the East).

The only remote connection to Sirius is some vague link to the constellation of Orion with ancient Egypt as well as the rise of the star linked to the annual flooding of the Nile River, but neither this constellation or the star have anything to do with Horus.

9. Ancient Egyptians celebrated the birth of Horus on December 21 (the Winter Solstice). Modern Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25.

The New Testament does not give any date for the birth of Jesus. Current beliefs actually place His birth around the time of Sukkot in the early fall. Horus was born on the 31st day of the Egyptian month of Khoiak which is in November to December. This Egyptian month is associated with the goddess Sekhmet.

10. Both births were announced by angels (this si nto the same as number 7).

At no point does anyone announce the birth of Horus. Isis deliberately kept his birth a secret to protect him from his fathers murderer.

11. Both had shepherds witnessing the birth.

There are no shepherds in the swamps, where Horus was born. No one witnessed the birth. This is not supported in the mythology.

12. Horus was visited at birth by “three solar deities” and Jesus was visited by “three wise men”.

Isis raised Horus in secret. He was not visited by any deities. This is not supported in the mythology.

13. After the birth of Horus, Herut tried to have Horus murdered. After the birth of Jesus, Herod tried to have Jesus murdered.

Set tried to kill Horus, as he killed Osiris. This was not done at birth, but later as adults. Horus won the battle but was blinded in one eye. Set suffered greater damage. The battle itself lasted 80 years. No such person as Herut exists in Egyptian mythology.

14. To hide from Herut, the god That tells Isis, “Come, thou goddess Isis, hide thyself with thy child.” To hide from Herod, an angel tells Joseph to “arise and take the young child and his mother and flee into Egypt.”

Herut does not exist in Egyptian mythology. No one told Isis to hide. She did that all on her own.

15. When Horus came of age, he had a special ritual where his eye was restored. When Jesus (and other Jews) come of age, they have a special ritual called a Bar Mitzvah.

The battle in which he lost his eye lasted 80 years. There was no ritual of restoration when he came of age. There is no comparison with the Bar Mitzvah.

Ah, the old "horus manure" myths.

Non-believers have a tendency to parrot the thing they hear other non-believers claim as truth.  And to be frank, so do some Christians.

What is the truth?

Here's where you can find much of it.  https://strangenotions.com/horus-manure/

16. Both Horus and Jesus were 12 at this coming-of-age ritual.

There was no coming of age ritual for Horus.

17. Neither have any official recorded life histories between the ages of 12 and 30.

There is plenty of recorded mythology about Horus as a youth. One of the various Horus mythologies is called Horus the Child. In the form of Harpokrates, Horus is the danger-beset son of Isis with one finger to his lips, signifying his childish nature (also evident in his princely sidelock and naked status).

18. Horus was baptized in the river Eridanus. Jesus was baptized in the river Jordan.

Horus was never baptized. That is not a ritual within Egyptian culture. Eridanus is a mythological river associated with Greek mythology, not Egyptian mythology.

19. Both were baptized at age 30.

Again, Horus was not baptized at any age.

20. Horus was baptized by Anup the Baptizer. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.

There is no one called Anup much less Anup the Baptizer in Egyptian lore.

21. Both Anup and John were later beheaded.

Anup is not a person within Egyptian mythology.

22. Horus was taken from the desert of Amenta up a high mountain to be tempted by his arch-rival Set. Jesus was taken from the desert in Palestine up a high mountain to be tempted by his arch-rival Satan.

This is not an event in the mythology of Horus.

23. Both Horus and Jesus successfully resist this temptation.

Horus did not face this event.

24. Both have 12 disciples.

Horus had priests not disciples, and he had many more than 12 of them.

25. Both walked on water, cast out demons, healed the sick, and restored sight to the blind.

Horus is not known for healing anyone, or casting out demons, or walking on water. Horus was thrown into a river tho. Horus was blind himself in one eye and at least once a month when these the sun and the moon are invisible (as on the night of the new moon) he goes blind and takes the name Mekhenty-er-irty, "He who has no eyes".

26. Horus “stilled the sea by his power.” Jesus commanded the sea to be still by saying, “Peace, be still.”

This is not an event within the Horus body of mythology.

27. Horus raised his dead father (Osiris) from the grave. Jesus raised Lazarus from the grave.

Isis raised Osiris up from the grave, and he then ruled the underworld. Horus had no role in that.

28. Osiris was raised in the town of Anu. Lazarus was raised in Bethanu (literally, “house of Anu”).

Osiris was raised by Pamyles and Thoth in Thebes. Lazarus was raised in the town of Bethany (Bethania in the original koine greek language of the new testament scriptures.)

29. Both gods delivered a Sermon on the Mount.

Horus did not deliver a sermon on the mount.

30. Both were crucified.

Horus was not crucified.

31. Both were crucified next to two thieves.

Horus was not crucified.

32. Both were buried in a tomb.

Horus was not dead and entombed either.

33. Horus was sent to Hell and resurrected in 3 days. Jesus was sent to Hell and came back “three days” later (although Friday night to Sunday morning is hardly three days).

Horus was not sent to the underworld and was not resurrected in 3 days, or any amount of days. Much later on, Horus was associated with Ra who died each day at sunset, traveled through the underworld, and rose the next morning.

34. Both had their resurrection announced by women.

Horus did not die or resurrect.

35. Both are supposed to return for a 1000-year reign.

Horus was always a reigning god in Egypt. He was not gone and expected to return for a millennial reign.
