THE DAY OF THE LORD

In Chapter Two of 2 Thes, Paul seems to indicate that the Thessalonians received a letter that he says appeared “as if from us” saying the Day of the Lord had already happened and Christ had returned.  It appeared that Paul had been informed that the Thessalonians were distressed and shaken by the news. In response then, Paul wrote this letter which he says only re-explains what he told them in person when he was with them:

Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to him, that you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come . . . Do you not remember that while I was still with you, I was telling you these things? (2 Thess. 2: 1-2,5)

This letter caused great concern in their church; in response, Paul wrote an epistle (2 Thessalonians) that forms the basis of much of what we know about the Day of the Lord.

The two things Paul is explaining in the first two chapters of the this epistle are:

  • What events occur on the Day of the Lord
  • What events (signs) we should look for before the Day of the Lord

The Olivet Discourse is the primary text Paul is using to explain the events that will happen on the Day of the Lord:

For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you,  and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed. (2 Thess. 1: 6-10)

Paul begins in Chapter One by describing the events of the day of the Lord.

  • The dual purpose of the Day of the Lord is stated: relief for the saints and affliction for the unrighteous. This is a key insight. The Day of the Lord has two purposes not just one.
  • Second, Jesus will be revealed from heaven on that Day with his mighty angels in flaming fire. (This is further explanation of Jesus’s description in Matt. 24: 30-31). The sign of the Son of Man from this verse in Matthew refers to is his Shekinah Glory which is called flaming fire in 2 Thess. 1.

In regard to the relief of the saints, we see that this comes when Jesus is revealed with his mighty angels in Shekinah glory.  It does not happen until that point. Notice it says it is relief for the Thessalonians and Paul as well.

Our relief does not come from a silent rapture.

Jesus is revealed on that day and all will see him. Matt. 24: 30 says “all the tribes of the earth will mourn.”

Second it is the day of the Resurrection as well. Paul and the Thessalonians receive their relief on the same day as all the saints throughout history.

We know the Resurrection occurs before the Rapture (1 Thess. 4: 16-17); thus

............................................the revealing of Jesus,

............................................the Resurrection

............................................the Rapture ......................................all happen on this one day, the Day of the Lord........

Now, jump over to Luke:

And just as it happened in the days of Noah, so it will be also in the days of the Son of Man they were eating, they were drinking, they were marrying, they were being given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all . . . On the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all It will be just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed. (Luke 17: 26-27, 29-30)

Jesus is telling us that on the SAME DAY that He is revealed......He saves the righteous (pictured by Noah and Lot).......and punishment will be poured out on the wicked that involves fire and brimstone.

Now if we look at Rev 8:7, the First Trumpet, the very beginning of God's wrath, we see this:

The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.

So now we see that the Day of the Lord contains both relief for the righteous (Resurrection and Rapture) and punishment of the wicked (God’s Wrath beginning with fire and brimstone.)

Paul continues in Thessalonians and tells us the signs to look for prior to the Day of the Lord:

Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Himthat you not be quickly shaken from your composure or be disturbed either by a spirit or a message or a letter as if from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction,  who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God. (2 Thess. 2: 1-4)

( all those who adhere to "apostasy" as "departure....ie: taken away, we're outa here"..... just follow the order as laid out in scripture. Jesus is revealed, then the resurrection, then the rapture....then the punishment of the wicked. )

Paul now refers back to the coming of the Lord and our gathering together to him he mentioned in the previous few verses. This is obviously the Rapture. Notice how he also calls it the Day of the Lord. This is further proof that the Rapture occurs on the Day of the Lord.

Two things must happen prior to the Day of the Lord:

:The Great Apostasy

:The Abomination of Desolation (which occurs as part of the revealing of the man of sin)

From Jesus' teaching in the Olivet Discourse:

Then they will deliver you to tribulation, and will kill you, and you will be hated by all nations because of My name. At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another.  Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many. Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold . . . “Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. (Matt. 24: 9-12, 15-16)

From Thessalonians, we can expect deception by the Antichrist:

The one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wondersand with all the deception of wickedness for those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth so as to be saved. For this reason God will send upon them a deluding influence so that they will believe what is false. (2 Thess. 2: 9-11)

Many false prophets will arise and will mislead many . . . For false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect. Behold, I have told you in advance. (Matt. 24: 11, 24-25)

HOW LONG IS THE DAY OF THE LORD

For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion. (Isa 34:8)

To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God (Isa. 61:2)

For the day of vengeance was in My heart, And My year of redemption has come. (Isa. 63:4)

Knowing that the Wrath of God begins on a day but lasts a year helps other scriptures fall into place.  Noah was in the Ark exactly one year and ten days.

In the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day all the fountains of the great deep burst open . . . In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry.  (Gen. 7:11, 8:14)

The coming of the Son of Man is to be like unto the days of Noah. Noah was above the earth 1 year and 10 days while the unrighteous were judged. The righteous will be above the earth 1 year and 10 days after the Rapture while the unrighteous will be judged during the Day of the Lord.

Now, look at this from Deut:

When a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army nor be charged with any duty; he shall be free at home one year and shall give happiness to his wife whom he has taken. (Deut. 24:5)

This prescription about marriage will be honored by Jesus. He will marry the Bride of Christ in heaven after the Rapture. Only a year later will he return to wage war against the Antichrist armies.  In Revelation 19 we see this exact order of events. The Wedding Supper of the Lamb takes place in heaven  first, only then does Jesus mount a white horse and return to the earth to fight Armageddon.  There is a one year period between the wedding and the return. That year will be the Day of the Lord.

Hi iamlamad....I respect your honesty. So what is wrong with this view? Can you be specific

This is part of the Mosaic Law.  There is nothing that says the Lord will honor His Bride in this way.  Just conjecture on your part.

For sure the Wrath of God begins on a day....  But Scripture does not say it lasts for only one year.  Conjecture on your part.

Much depends on when one thinks what is considered part of the Wrath of God.  What parts of Rev 6 to 19 does one consider part of the Wrath of God.  Does the Wrath begin with the 1st Seal, the 1st Trumpet, or the 1st Vial; or where in these is the Start of His Wrath.  The 5th Trumpet lasts for 5 months, the 6th Trumpet takes at least 6 months or more to travel from China to the Euphrates River (1800 miles, based on 25 miles per day); and at least another month for the first of this group to reach Armageddon from the Euphrates River (700 miles).

Just a few of the inconsistencies I see.

It's an interesting hypothesis.

It's been a while since I covered end-time prophecies, and I'm not sure if I'm ready to get into it, but you may have a case. I can promise you the pre-tribulationists will take issue with a one-year wrath period because they maintain the rapture occurs before the 7-year tribulation begins. The post-tribulation crowd will likewise also take issue with it because most of them maintain that when He returns there will be no time left in the tribulation period; all will be consummated.

I hold to neither of those views, however, so I find your argument has some plausibility to it.

Hi Montana Marv,

When does the day of the Lord start? Joel 2 30-31 tells us....

Joel 2:30-31 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

The Day of the Lord

30 “I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth,
Blood, fire and columns of smoke.
31 “The sun will be turned into darkness
And the moon into blood
Before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

If we study Revelation carefully, there is only one place where fire comes down from heaven that could be the fire on the Day of the Lord: the First Trumpet Judgment:

Revelation 8:7 New American Standard Bible (NASB)

7 The first sounded, and there came hail and fire, mixed with blood, and they were thrown to the earth; and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

The mixture of hail and fire is a direct reference to Ps 18

Let's go back to what Paul says:   2Thes 2:6-10 .....it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from Heaven with His mighty angels......

So we have  "relief for the saints" (ressurection/rapture).....and this comes when Jesus is revealed with His mighty angels in Shekinah glory. It does not happen until that point.

and "affliction for the unrighteous" (Wrath of God/Day of the Lord).........

In Luke 17:29-30,

29" but on the day that Lot went out from Sodom it rained fire and [a]brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 It will be [b]just the same on the day that the Son of Man is revealed."

Jesus is telling us that on the same day He is revealed (with his angels in flaming fire) and saves the righteous (pictured by Noah and Lot) punishment will be poured out on the wicked that includes fire and brimstone.

In Thes 2......."to the effect that the day of the Lord has come. Let no one in any way deceive you, for IT will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed......"

Right there we have the timing of the Day of the Lord. ......."for IT will not come"....."IT" referring to the Day of the Lord, because the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness comes first.

The seven sealed scroll contains the title deed to the earth, the book of life (all the names of the righteous) and the wrath of God. After the seventh seal is broken, there is silence in heaven for a half an hour. Zephaniah prophesied this would happen prior to the pouring out of God's wrath.

"Be silent before the Lord God, for the Day of the Lord is near." Zeph 1:7

Psalm 65: 1-4........" There will be silence [a]before You,(in heaven) and praise in Zion,(on earth) O God,
And to You the vow will be performed.
O You who hear prayer,
To You all [b]men come.
[c]Iniquities prevail against me;
As for our transgressions, You [d]forgive them.
How blessed is the one whom You choose and bring near to You
To dwell in Your courts.
We will be satisfied with the goodness of Your house,
Your holy temple.

This passage shows the contrast of silence in heaven and praise on earth. This happens at the seventh seal. Jesus has left heaven and has gone for his bride........the rapture/resurrection!

So, the Day of the Lord begins at the seventh seal. The seal opens, the rapture/resurrection takes place, the Day of the Lord commences.

The Great Tribulation begins at the midpoint of the 70th week. "Unless those days were cut short".....well, they are cut short, by the rapture/resurrection. If we, on the earth, are supposed to endure the full tribulation, that would be 3 1/2 years. But God cuts it short. So if are resurrected/raptured after enduring for a while, that would leave time for the Day of the Lord being about a year long.

You said........"the 6th Trumpet takes at least 6 months or more to travel from China to the Euphrates River (1800 miles, based on 25 miles per day); and at least another month for the first of this group to reach Armageddon from the Euphrates River (700 miles)

Talking about conjecture.....on your part. Are you suggesting that the army of 200 million are Chinese? And they are all on horses? As of 2012, there were only about 60 million horses world wide...... old horses, young horses, race horses, trail horses. As were the locusts of the fifth trumpet were demons, I suggest that the army of 200 million in the sixth trumpet will also be demonic. Also, note that it says "they are released"

Rev 9: 13-15....Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard [a]a voice from the [b]four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14 one saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” 15 And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released, so that they would kill a third of [c]mankind.

"they"  .....refers to the four angels. "they" would kill a third of mankind.

17 And [a]this is how I saw in the vision the horses and those who sat on them: the riders had breastplates the color of fire and of hyacinth and of [b]brimstone; and the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths proceed fire and smoke and [c]brimstone. 18 A third of [d]mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the fire and the smoke and the [e]brimstone which proceeded out of their mouths. 19 For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads, and with them they do harm.

You said:......."For sure the Wrath of God begins on a day....  But Scripture does not say it lasts for only one year.  Conjecture on your part."

I've provided three scriptures to prove it lasts a year:

For the Lord has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion. (Isa 34:8)

To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord and the day of vengeance of our God (Isa. 61:2)

For the day of vengeance was in My heart, And My year of redemption has come. (Isa. 63:4)

You said....."Here all mankind and animals were killed within the first few days.  The floods and rains lasted only 40 days.  So where is Gods Wrath beyond the 40th day.  There is none, so your One Year and 10 days does not fly.

God's wrath was not in the rain only. His judgment was a full year .

Thanks for your dialogue....much appreciated

"Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to him"

This will be the first thing that the Lord does when He is ready

Then the day of the Lord will begin

Be careful with your interpretation

Yes, our gathering together to Him.....at the seventh seal. When the seal is broken, then the resurrection, then the rapture, then the Day of the Lord begins.

All in the same day. This is not my interpretation....it's what's laid out in scripture.

The seals are not intended to forecast events .... the tribulation period does not start until Revelation 8

First the Lord will come for today's believers .... then He will bring His wrath and judgment upon an unbelieving world

The day of the Lord will begin

If we study Revelation carefully, there is only one place where fire comes down from heaven that could be the fire on the Day of the Lord: the First Trumpet Judgment:

Joe

If timing is everything.  The Trumpeted judgments could easily last one year or more.  No specific date given when they begin during the 70th Week.  The Bowls judgments could easily last at least another 6 months.  Just as the 4 angels who hold back the Euphrates River, they have a specific hour, day, and year already established.

A judgment on who or whom.  If all who were to be judged have already died before the rains even stopped, there is no one for His Wrath to fall on.  Do you see my point.

You are cherry picking a few verse and trying to fit your eschatology stance in them.

In Christ
