Blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame. 16 And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon.

This is the Lord speaking as the narrative goes on .... His is omniscient and omnipressive

And He is referring to His coming as thief at the beginning of His muster and actions to bring the coming tribulation period

His first action will be to make Christians on this side of His wrath and judgment immortal [Revelation 7:9-17]

He will then immediately begin His process to bring judgment upon an unbelieving world including the battle of Armageddon at the end of the 70th week decreed [Revelation 6:12-17]

Make certain that you get this fact

In Christ

Montana Marv

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

MM, there is not a single word that indicates they thought they missed something. "At hand" means near in time. They thought the day of Christ (day of the Lord) was near because they thought the intense persecution they were experiencing was that of the great tribulation.

Teaching that they thought they missed the rapture, you are reading your pre-trib system into the text. Reading anything into the text is inherently dangerous.

Let us look at the passage.

2Th 2:1  Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

2Th 2:2  That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand.

2Th 2:3  Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

If you contend that the translation “is at hand” in verse 2 is not correct and should be something like “has already come,” because, the verb that is translated “is at hand” is in the perfect tense and thus signifies completed past action with present results, then you are following Greek grammarians who are operating under a flawed outmoded linguistic concept which the KJV translators had sense enough to disregard in this passage.

The English expression “is at hand” was rightly given by the KJV translators to represent the Greek word ἐνέστηκεν from the root ἐνίστημι (enistēmi) in this context. The expression “at hand” was defined in that day as "near in time or not distant".

My claim is that “the day of the Christ” in verse 2, which Paul says was not at hand (near in time), consists of both the “coming (Parousia = coming and continuing presence) of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together unto Him; both of these we see in verse 1 and both of these take place or are initiated on the same day, according to numerous statements of the Holy Scriptures.

I would also suspect that it is your contention that the “day of Christ” in verse 2 is an error and should be "day of the Lord" (like so many of the new versions translated from the critical Greek text).

To maintain the pre-trib system it is absolutely necessary that the KJV translators were in error by using both “at hand” which means near in time and “the day of Christ”, which many pre-tribbers believe is something different than “the day of the Lord.”

Without delving into Greek verb tense form and verbal aspect, which would likely be a lesson in futility, contending with a host of pre-trib “Greek Doctors”, I shall attempt to use the Scriptures themselves, expounded in their context, to expose the truths of Paul's teaching.

When Paul wrote his second epistle to the Thessalonians, he let us know that they were experiencing persecutions and tribulations.

2Th 1:3  We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

2Th 1:4  So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

He encouraged them, thanking God that they responded rightly to the tribulations, which resulted in their faith and love abounding. He also encouraged them concerning their future deliverance at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Paul said that it is then, that He will recompense tribulation upon those who have persecuted them.

2Th 1:5  Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

2Th 1:6  Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

2Th 1:7  And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

The revelation of Jesus Christ happens right after the sun, moon, and stars go dark and right before the resurrection/rapture

Rev 1:7  Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.

Mat 24:29  Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

Mat 24:30  And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

Mat 24:31  And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Note: The Revelation 19 description of Christ takes place after the trumpet and vial judgements, His revelation referred to above takes place before the trumpet and vial judgments.

At His revelation, His vengeance will begin to be poured out upon the unbelievers, resulting in their everlasting destruction.

2Th 1:8  In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

2Th 1:9  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

Paul says all this will take place when Christ comes to be glorified in his saints.

2Th 1:10  When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

Paul said that he prayed that the Thessalonians would be counted worthy to suffer for Christ and that Christ’s name might be glorified in them, and they in Christ.

2Th 1:11  Wherefore also we pray always for you, that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfil all the good pleasure of his goodness, and the work of faith with power:

The calling is to suffer for Jesus.

Act 5:41  And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for his name.

Php 1:29  For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

1Th 3:3  That no man should be moved by these afflictions: for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.

The martyrdom of the believer glorifies God.

2Th 1:12  That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and ye in him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Here, we see that Jesus spoke of Peter’s future martyrdom.

Joh 21:19  This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.

Paul then says concerning Christ’s coming and the resurrection/rapture don’t be shaken or troubled that it, the day of Christ, is at hand or near in time.

The day of Christ is His coming (parousia) and our gathering unto Him. It is also called the day of the Lord because immediately after the resurrection/rapture He begins to pour out His fierce wrath upon the unbelieving Beast worshipping earth dwellers in the form of the trumpet and vial judgements.

Paul says here that the good work of partnership in the Gospel will be performed until the day of Jesus Christ.

Php 1:6  Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ:

Paul says we are to be sincere and without offence till we see Christ. The day of Jesus Christ is when we see Him.

Php 1:10  That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ;

1Jn 3:2  Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

1Jn 3:3  And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure.

Then Paul tells them two things must happen before that day (the second coming and resurrection/rapture) can come: a falling away and the revelation of the man of sin.

2Th 2:3  Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

The revelation of the man of sin will involve the Antichrist in the Temple demanding to be worshiped as God.

2Th 2:4  Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Paul says that he told the Thessalonians these things before.

2Th 2:5  Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things?

Paul says they know what is keeping the Antichrist from being revealed until it is his time.

2Th 2:6  And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time.

The restrainer is Michael the archangel that Daniel said would stand up (stand aside) after which would be a time of unparalleled trouble. This unparalleled trouble is that same period of persecution that Jesus called great tribulation.

Dan 12:1  And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

Dan 12:2  And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

Mat 24:21  For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.

Michael is specially equipped to deal with Satan.

Jud 1:9  Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

Rev 12:7  And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,

Rev 12:8  And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

Rev 12:9  And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

Dan 10:13  But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.

When Michael casts Satan to the earth in the middle of the week the Antichrist shall be revealed.

2Th 2:7  For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way. (until he stands aside in the middle)

2Th 2:8  And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:

Satan gives the Beast his power and lying wonders are performed by the False Prophet.

2Th 2:9  Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

2Th 2:10  And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

Because they didn’t love but rejected the truth the earth dwellers will be convinced by the miracles performed by the False Prophet and worship the beast, receiving his mark and thereby be eternally damned.

2Th 2:11  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

2Th 2:12  That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

All praise, honour, and glory be unto the Lord Jesus Christ

I have to agree with you here. If indeed they thought the Day of the Lord was at hand, past action present results, then they missed the gathering. They would have been taught the gathering only comes at the day of Christ and that moment would have passed if they felt they were already WITHIN Christ's day.

A day that begins in a moment, but lasts a thousand years.

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

Diaste, the expression “at hand” means "near in time or not distant". They believed that the day (which includes the rapture) was near in time because they were experiencing severe persecution. Jesus taught that great tribulation comes before His parousia involving the gathering of His own unto Himself.

Notice that Paul didn't tell the Thessalonians that the unprecedented persecution (great tribulation) had to come first, even though Jesus spent a good portion of the Olivet Discourse speaking of the unprecedented persecution that comes before His arrival at His parousia which is the day of Christ or the day of the Lord. Instead, he tells them of the departure from the faith that will accompany it. Jesus referred to this departure when He said, many shall be offended and when He spoke of the great deception. He also told them of the revelation of the Beast which defiles the temple, by referencing Daniel's abomination of desolation.

Even though the Thessalonians were experiencing severe persecution the falling away hadn't happened nor had the man of sin been revealed. So, Paul comforted and corrected them; the tribulation that they faced was not that of the eschaton.

Hallelujah

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

By all means, please show us where they thought they missed something. Chapter and verse will do nicely.

Anybody can make an assertion, however, unless it can be supported with proof it falls to the ground as worthless. Don't be one of those who are continually long on assertions and short on proof. As they say in Texas, all hat, no cattle.

Let Jesus be praised.

2Th 1:3  We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is meet, because that your faith groweth exceedingly, and the charity of every one of you all toward each other aboundeth;

2Th 1:4  So that we ourselves glory in you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that ye endure:

2Th 1:6  Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

2Th 1:9  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

Php 1:29  For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake;

2Th 2:1  Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him,

You have seemed to miss the point of context.  Why did Paul need to correct some of the Thessalonians?  By believing that they had missed "the day of the Lord".  Paul had to interject this passage.  So they were told and or taught that the "day of the Lord" was at hand, and they missed it.  Now what "day of the Lord" did some of the Thessalonians think they had missed?  Did they think they missed the Second Coming or something else.

Don't put a Scriptural blame game of me, with your rhetoric.  So I see that you have rejected the truth.  Is this last half of your diatribe referring to yourself, I know it must not be about me.

It all depends which "day of the Lord" is being referred to Bud.  2 Peter 3:10 - But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.  The heavens will disappear with a roar, the elements will will be destroyed by fire.....  Joel 1:15 - Alas, for that day, For the day of the Lord is near, it will come like destruction from the Almighty.  1 Thess 5:2 - for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night..  While people are saying peace and safety, destruction will come upon them suddenly.     1 Cor 5:5c - and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.  Isa 2:12 - The Lord Almighty has a day in store.... v17b - the Lord alone will be exalted in that day...

Yet 2 Thess 2:2 saying the day of the Lord has already come.  Did they miss the 2 Coming (when every eye will see Him), did they miss the old earth passing onto the New Heaven and the New Earth, Did they miss death and destruction, or did they think they had missed the Rapture???  Not all day of the Lords are the same.
