Can we assume Jesus only meant adultery here?  I think it would have been easy enough to say "go and commit adultery no more" if that's what he meant.

I think that is a logical thought, that it's adultery, but Jesus cannot mean all sin, as "Christians who say they have no sin lie".

Do you believe that this verse teaches that redemption means no more sin?  How do you interpret this verse?

"go and sin no more"...as it applies to a believer, is our daily cost of discipleship.

Its our "present our body a living sacrifice".

Its how we are to live in the Light, as He is in the light and IS the Light.

If my daughter gets caught with her hand in the cookie jar, I will let her off the first time .I will warn her not to do it again. If she does it again she will be punished. It is up to her at all times . She will commit other sins down the road-she is human, after all.Same principles apply to the adulteress. She got a warning for the one specific sin.Paul was “ chief of sinners” many year after he was saved. Was this woman or us expected to do better than he did?

You say Jesus knows it's impossible to never commit a sin ever again.  Is there a scripture in the Bible that confirms this?

1 John 1:8 says, "If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us."

Note very, very carefully, "If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us."

Jesus doesn't give burdensome, impossible goals. 1 John 1:8 teaches that Christians who claim sinless perfectionism are actually self-deceived, and are not born again Christians.

I believe the born again person is of God tied directly to The Person of God The Holy Spirit... so yes we are to strive to be of God in all that we are! This means a constant battle of flesh and s/Spirit here... it is God Who keeps separate the things of flesh (things of this world that pass away)  from the things of s/Spirit (which God keeps with Himself for all eternity).

It sounds like in the previous 2 verses before that he's taking about the process of being redeemed from sin.  How do we know the "if we say we have no sin" in verse 8 isn't in response to trying to find redemption? Can it be assumed he's also talking about a person who's already been redeemed?

"We" and "us" includes John the apostle. If Christians are utterly without sin, entire chapters of scripture like Hebrews 12, "run the race, throw off sin, God chastises sinful believers..." make no sense.

But that would also make what Jesus said impossible when he said to "be perfect as your heavenly father is perfect".  How can anyone be that perfect if they're always a sinner even after salvation?
