At the moment you were born-again …

you were only forgiven of the sins you had committed up to that point in time!

“For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness,

and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his OLD sins.

Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call

and election sure, for IF you do these things you will never stumble;

for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting

kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” (2 Peter 1:9-11, NKJV)

“OLD sins” is also in the KJV, RSV, NLT, AMP

“having forgotten his purification from his FORMER sins.” (2 Peter 1:9, NASB)

“FORMER sins” is also in the ESV

forgetting that they have been cleansed from their PAST sins.(2 Peter 1:9, NIV)

“PAST sins” is also in the HCSB

Now for some confirming NT passages …

Paul wrote this to the Corinthian church concerning his words of rebuke

in 1 Corinthians that he had sent to them concerning some particular sin(s).

They really needed to be sorrowful and repent.

the pain (from his rebuke) caused you to repent and change your ways.

It was the kind of sorrow God wants His people to have, so you were not

harmed by us in any way.  For the kind of sorrow God wants us to experience

leads us away from sin and results in salvation.worldly sorrow, which lacks

repentance, results in spiritual (eternal) death.” (2 Corinthians 7:8-10, NLT)

“Yes, I am afraid that when I come again, God will humble me in your presence.

And I will be grieved because many of you have not given up your old sins.

You have not repented of your impurity, sexual immorality,

and eagerness for lustful pleasure.(2 Corinthians 12:21, NLT)

Peter is warning believers about God’s destruction of all ungodly and unholy people:

“Then he used the water to destroy the ancient (ungodly) world … the day of judgment,

when ungodly people will be destroyed. … He is being patient for your sake. He does not

want anyone to be destroyed (perish spiritually), but (he) wants everyone to repent.

… what holy and godly lives you should live … (you) make every effort to be found living

peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.  … I am warning you ahead of time

… Be on guard so that you will not be carried away by the errors …” (2 Peter 3:6-17, NLT)

John gives the condition for the Lord to forgive believers’ present sins:

“But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins

and to cleanse us from all wickedness (unrighteousness).(1 John 1:9, NLT)

This is an extremely important verse … all men need to be repeatedly purified from all

unrighteousness – from all their sins … We must confess our sins and turn from them

… We must also confess them with our actions … (John) is talking here about repentance

… we must hate our sins and turn from them. This is true repentance.

(The Applied New Testament Commentary; Dr. Thomas Hale)

2 verses later, John reminds believers to ask Jesus to plead our case before the Father:

“My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin.

But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before

the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous.(1 John 2:1, NLT)

Believers are responsible for repenting of their sins after they are born-again!

They have been given the Holy Spirit, a totally new nature, and God’s word.

So, they have been enabled to be victorious overcomers over sin, the world,

and the devil. They have no excuse for failing to do this.

2 Peter 1:9 clearly states that Born-Again Christians were cleansed of their old (past) sins,

and they need to be careful in the future as the Holy Spirit attempts to progressively sanctify them.

(A multitude of NT verses state believers can fail in this process - and can fall away, etc. etc. etc.)

This verse simply agrees with several NT passages in the OP,

which state that BACs must be diligent to repent of their future sins.

And 1 John 1:7-9 provides the clearest formula for this.

I'm not open to arguing the topic with anyone.

It is my understanding that God forgives all our sins when we become a christian even the future ones.    At this point we stand justified before God because of Christ's righteousness not our own.   But it is clear from the 1 John 1:9 that we are to confess our sins and repent of our sins if we sin.   John was writing to the Church.  In the upper room the disciples were clean but needed only their feet to be cleaned.   If I am wrong about this love to hear more.  Let's be kind one to another.

The whole NT warns about the consequences of sin.

And most of it (the epistles) was written to the churches!

You have to decide if God is bluffing, exaggerating, even lying.

Better still: you need to RECONCILE the so-called OSAS NT verses

with the many NT verses which are against OSAS.

And this is easily done ...

The single word "believe" must actually mean:

believe, have faith in, trust, and obey.

@Frances Like you, I'm here to learn, and appreciate all I've learned/gleaned through the brothers and sisters here in 11 days: and when I'm wrong, I want correction. I'm not JW, Mormon, Catholic, preterist, or dispensationalist; but was taught and believe that while we were in Adam, we were not responsible for Adam's sin; but now after the cross, we are accountable for our own sins. We won't get by with anything before a Holy God, therefore, all the scriptures attesting to our responsibility by faith and His grace. He gives grace to the humble, and more grace as we seek His will and pleasure. He has given us power to become sons, so it is not an automatic. If we walk in the Spirit, (continually) in His Light, we are being cleansed as we walk. We are to grow up into the Head, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, unto a perfect man...

Was also taught, by a beloved elderly Saint, that "Yes, Once Saved Always Saved is true: IF you're saved. We are saved by His Life." To me that means, when He returns, will we be found in His Life or our own?  The law of the Spirit of Life has made me free from the law of sin and death. In which law are we living? I still go in and out...but he who remains in Him...

He that overcomes will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and I will write upon him my new name. Rev 3:12

So in other words, you are either trying to teach some kind of holiness doctrine, or you are trying to teach salvation thru works.  Neither position is viable.

If Jesus did not sacrifice Himself for all of our sins, past, present and future, then He did not sacrifice Himself for any of them.  As the perfect sacrifice, He was amply able to pay for all the sins we have or could commit, or He was not an effective and complete sacrifice.  When you teach what you are teaching above, you are saying that Jesus is not a good enough sacrifice.  This is what Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses teach.  Partial salvation.  Jesus just pays for the past sins and then it's up to the individual to do enough good works to earn their way into heaven on the installment plan like they are buying a BMW.

Having no formal teaching except for traditions like "making a list, checking it twice, gonna find out whose naughty and nice, Santa Claus is coming to town", this is what I believed when I first repented.  I didn't realize that salvation is a a free gift, by grace through faith, not of works.  So I thought I had a second chance to be good enough to go to heaven.  It was horrible bondage!  It is a lie of satan, and it took years to free me from it.

1 John 2: KJV

1 "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:"

A letter addressed to the Saints showing that future sins are forgiven because we have an advocate, Jesus Christ..

We are not supposed to sin when we are born-again, a.k.a. accepted Christ. That's why Christ died for our sins, and our past sins are being cleansed and be remembered no more. Christ doesn't need to die for us believers if we sinned or stumbled because we would just repent and make the decision to turn to him and love Him.  We as believers would no longer sin ignorantly--choosing to sin or disobey Him.

Betha, thanks for your clear thinking,

or was it via the Holy Spirit leading you into all truth?

These 2 verses have been brought to my attention recently …

“Repent of your wickedness and pray to the Lord.

Perhaps he will forgive your evil thoughts (i.e. sins). (Acts 8:22, NLT)

“Dear friends, if we deliberately continue sinning after we have
received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice

that will cover these sins." (Hebrews 10:26, NLT)
