from the Revival in Southern California during the late 60's early 70's there are alot of songs inspired from the Psalms, some of my favorites are, One Thing Have I Desired Ps. 27:4, You Are the Rock of my Salvation Ps 89:26, As the Deer Pants Ps 42:1,  Hear My Cry o'LORD  Ps 61:1-3,  Jesus, Allelujah...

:amen:I got saved during this Revival. So although I love the hymns, I also love these scripture songs listed. Maranatha was a group who recorded some beautiful renditions of the Psalms including As the Deer Pants.

Yes, Melinda12 - my husband and I rejoice whenever we hear, sing along to, join in with, meditate on the words of the wonderful hymns we have at our disposal to sing anywhere, anytime.  We love hymns more than any other song, as they evoke a deep sense of the presence of the Lord and tears roll down as we remember the price He paid for us at Calvary and how we want to remember and talk with Him every day... these songs given to saints by the Lord are definitely special.

"My hope is built on nothing less"-

Hi turtletwo

This is one of my favourites, too ... I think it was written by Fanny Crosby, who was blind and I think lived until 95 years of age.

I also love "It is well with my soul" and "When I survey the wondrous cross".

I have a lovely book called THEN SINGS MY SOUL, written by Robert J. Morgan, given to me by a very special friend.  In it are 150 of the world’s greatest hymn stories.  Wouldn’t it make a wonderful Christmas gift?  Here is a Christmas carol, Omegaman!

@SelahSong The hymns are indeed a treasure. Including the carols. :)That sure looks like a beautiful book! So glad your dear friend gave it to you.

Gifts with spiritual significance are most precious as they touch someone in a place that ordinary gifts can not reach.

@SelahSong From your pictures (which I don't know how to enlarge on my computer), I notice there is a page of writing next to the hymn's lyrics. Does that tell the background of how the hymn came to be written? Or is it of true stories of people touched by the hymn?

The page with writing tells all about how the songwriter came to write the song.  Wow! Some of these stories are amazing and truly inspiring!  God gifts us all in so many different ways. :emot-heartbeat:

I just love them. I have a number of hymn books at home. I read hymns as prayer and inspiration. I look up about the writers as there are so many that had exceptionally interesting lives.

Does anyone else have this interest? I am not very good at praying you see. Thiugh i pray daily. Hymn writers say it so much better!

I also love the old hymns and have a few old hymnals....I found two in a church thrift shop, and another I got when a church got new hymnals and was giving the old ones away for a donation.   The oldest hymnal was 50 years old a few years ago when I gave it to a young man studying to become a pastor.

My favorites are Be Thou My Vision and It Is Well With My Soul, but there are so many other beautiful hymns.   The modern worship songs just don't have the same depth as the old hymns.
