I hope this helps you to see that great tribulation is the unprecedented persecution of the elect and Israel and not the wrath of God poured out upon the day of the Lord after the great tribulation is over.

It gives me zero help.

Matt 24:21 - For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now - and never to be equaled again.

Future time of great distress, after the mid point of the final week, seen at the A/D.  Unequaled from the beginning of the world until now.  No persecution of the elect or Israel at the beginning of the world. So you have a persecution issue that is not there.  This time of great distress happens after those of Judea flee to the mountains.  Immediately after the distress of those days, up to the end of the final week; 3 1/2 years, 42 months, or 1,260 days.  The Great Tribulation affects all, but more so those who have received the Mark of the Beast. And the 5th Trumpet-  torment those who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads for 5 months, and the agony they suffer.  This is just part of that great distress.

Just something for consideration and it's a little complex. We know the day count is set in concrete and will not be changed, seven Jewish years of 360 days for the tribulation, agreed? If those days were not shortened, is it possible the 24 hour day count could be shortened by 1/3?

Revelation 8:12 (KJV) And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.

This is a reduction of eight (8) hours of daily. It's a very long boring detailed explanation, but it all boils down to; what if the Antichrist tinkers with the "time" and seasons, to synchronize with the new day / night cycles. The reasons would be beneficial for his goals and in all the confusion, everyone would be on the same page (clock).

I've always held on to the traditional view, that if the tribulation lasted more than seven years it would wipe out all flesh. But it's well known and established in the O.T. the length of the 'time of Jacob's trouble', 'Daniel's 70th week and the tribulation time period. Why would Jesus mention "if the days were not shortened"? It would seem something extraordinary is going to occur, not to mention all the supernatural events taking place.

That's just something I ran across that seems to be plausible and possible to consider, tinkering with time and the 24 hour day due to the changing of the climate and day / night cycles?

Greetings to all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

Dennis1209, there is not a single place in all of the Holy Scriptures that says there is a seven-year period called the tribulation. The word tribulation is translated from the Greek word thlipsis. It refers to pressure and its meaning is highly dependent on the context. Since Jesus said that in this world we would have tribulation (thlipsis) and Paul said that all they that will live Godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution, and he also said that we are appointed unto thlipsis (1Thes 3:3) and that it is given on the behalf of Christ to suffer for His sake (Phil 1:29), it can rightly be said that we are today living in the tribulation period. However, we are not in Daniel's seventieth week, nor are we in Jacob's trouble or what Jesus called great tribulation. The seventieth week begins with the confirming of the covenant and there is no mention of anything being unprecedented until the abomination of desolation takes place. The unprecedented violent persecution of the great tribulation doesn't begin until the middle of the seven years when the abomination of desolation takes place. Jesus tells us all about it in Matt 24:9-29.

Greetings to all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

MM, it is an idiom that means unprecedented. You use a poor translation. From righteous Able, the son of Adam, to the last dear saint martyred before the rapture, the righteous have always been and will be persecuted. This persecution will intensify in scope and severity in the middle of the seventieth week. Then it will be called Jacob's trouble, an unprecedented time of trouble (Dan 12:1), and great tribulation. In the context of each of those references trouble and tribulation refers to violent persecution. Jesus is saying that the persecution of the elect (the righteous) will be unprecedented in nature right before He comes for us, so much so, that if it wasn't shortened in time none of the elect would be left alive.

Greetings to all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

MM, The great tribulation is Satan's wrath through the Beast upon the elect and Israel. The day of the Lord is the wrath of God, His fierce vengeance upon the earth dwellers who worshipped the Beast and persecuted us, the elect. Until you understand this simple truth you will not rightly understand what Christ, the prophets and the apostles had to say about the events which precede Christ's coming. The trumpet and vial judgments come after the great tribulation is over. Having been raptured, Christ will pour out His wrath upon our persecutors.

2Th 1:6  Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;
2Th 1:7  And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,
2Th 1:8  In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:
2Th 1:9  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;
2Th 1:10  When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day.

Glory be to Jesus Christ our Lord

The distress of the last 3 1/2 years are cosmic developments upon the earth, seismic developments, social insanity, God protecting Israel through Michael during the last half of the week (Jacob's trouble).  I see none other.

The persecution of the history of the Church has not increased, I would say has remained steady.  Most of the Apostles received terrible deaths, and so have many others (especially under Rome), others have not; so violent persecution is not the issue here.  The problem with your scenario is all the elect of the Church are taken, none need to be left alive.  Those alive are taken.  We don't need to be around for there is an angel flying in midair proclaiming the eternal Gospel - Rev 14:6,7.

Include as part of the Great Tribulation (final 3 1/2 years) is Satan's onslaught against Israel.  FYI, the person hood of the beast as the Antichrist, and with him the False Prophet, they rule during the first 3 1/2 years of the Final Week, the lessor great tribulation. These two wage war against the Tribulation Saints, yet allowing Israel to live safe in their Land.  You need to go over the S,T,B Judgments and see who they are directed at.  None at Israel.

Rev 9:18 (6th Trumpet) - a third of mankind was killed was killed by the three plagues.....  v.20 - The rest of mankind (2/3rds) that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they (the rest of mankind) did not stop worshiping demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood.....

So who do you think the rest of mankind is?  Scripture says they all (did not stop) worshiping demons and idols....  So all mankind was worshiping demons and idols for a while before the 6th Trumpet.

Now, I think you see why I do not believe how you put things together.  I see no Christian Elect anywhere near, before or after, Rev 9:18-21.

Greetings to all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

MM, you are arguing against things that I neither believe nor teach. You definitely are not grasping what I nor many others are clearly teaching. You need to understand what one is saying before answering them. In the nuclear industry, I was taught a principle called repeat back. When something was said the hearer would have to repeat it back to him to ensure that what was communicated was understood. I think that principle is a good one to use here.

As I understand Christ, the Prophets, and the Apostles, there will be, prior to Christ's return, events which will indicate to us that His arrival approaches. These events include but are not limited to 1) The covenant confirmed with the many; 2) The happenings that Jesus calls the beginning of sorrows; 3) what John sees at the opening of the first six seals (the first three of which parallel the beginning of sorrows); 4) the abomination of desolation (the man of sin is revealed in the temple defiling it) begins the unprecedented persecution following the beginning of sorrows (this corresponds with what John sees at the opening of the 4th and 5th seals); 5) many will fall away (depart from the faith) when violent persecution and the deception of the lying signs and wonders take place; 6) the cosmic sign of Joel, that Jesus referenced and John saw, happens, heralding Christ's arrival; 7) Christ appears in the clouds in His glory with the holy angels, at which time He resurrects and raptures His own.

After we are safe before the throne in heaven Christ begins to pour out His wrath upon the earth-dwellers in the trumpet and vial judgments. You are correct, none of these judgements are focussed upon Israel. They are part of the hour of temptation that will come upon all the world to try the earth dwellers who will have been worshipping the Beast and persecuting the saints.

Glory be to Jesus Christ

  • For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will.  Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short.  Matthew 24:21-22

This passage is speaking of the time when the man of sin wages war against the saints for forty-two months.  The forty-two months have been decreed and will not be shortened.  It is the time of great tribulation that is shortened.  If the unfettered persecution of the saints were allowed to continue for the full forty-two month duration, no flesh would be saved.  In order to understand how those days are cut short, we need to look at the word that's translated "for the sake of."

dia
dee-ah'

A primary preposition denoting the channel of an act; through (in very wide applications, local, causal or occasional).

The days of unfettered persecution, or great tribulation, are cut short through the elect.  Who are the elect?  And how do they cut short those days?  When Matthew 24:29 is compared with Revelation 6:12, we see that the great tribulation ends when the sixth seal is opened.  This is also the time when God's judgment / wrath begins.  God's judgment is brought about through the plagues which are attributed to the two witnesses.  We also see that after the sixth seal is opened that the 144,000 are sealed.  We don't know exactly what the 144,000 do but they just so happen to come on the scene at that time.

It's possible then that the great tribulation is brought to an end through the plagues.  People will be more concerned with their own welfare than they are with persecuting the saints.  And those who choose to reject the mark and the image might find refuge among the 144,000.

Just something to consider because cutting short the great tribulation for the sake of those who were martyred as a result of it just doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

Shalom, Last Daze.

The Greek word "dia" followed by the genitive case is translated as "through"; however, followed by the accusative case, it is translated as "because of" or "on account of," and "tous eklektous" ("the elect") is in the accusative case.

Shalom, Montana Marv.

Sorry, but the "tribulation" (the pressure) has been going on since the First Century A.D. It won't end until the Messiah returns, as promised.  The "great tribulation" doesn't last for a mere 3.5 years; it's been almost 2,000 years!

Furthermore, the "great tribulation" is CONDITIONAL. That is, if it met certain conditions, THEN it would be a "great tribulation."

Look at it IN CONTEXT once again:

Matthew 24:9-31 (KJV)

9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. 10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. 11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. 12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. 13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

15 When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) 16 Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: 17 Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: 18 Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. 19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! 20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: 21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22 And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened. 23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. 24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. 25 Behold, I have told you before.

26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. 27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 28 For wheresoever the carcase is, there will the eagles be gathered together.

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Mark 13:9-27 (KJV)

9 But take heed to yourselves: for they shall deliver you up to councils; and in the synagogues ye shall be beaten: and ye shall be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them.

10 And the gospel must first be published among all nations. 11 But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost. 12 Now the brother shall betray the brother to death, and the father the son; and children shall rise up against their parents, and shall cause them to be put to death. 13 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.

14 But when ye shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing where it ought not, (let him that readeth understand,) then let them that be in Judaea flee to the mountains: 15 And let him that is on the housetop not go down into the house, neither enter therein, to take any thing out of his house: 16 And let him that is in the field not turn back again for to take up his garment. 17 But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! 18 And pray ye that your flight be not in the winter. 19 For in those days shall be affliction, such as was not from the beginning of the creation which God created unto this time, neither shall be. 20 And except that the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh should be saved: but for the elect's sake, whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days. 21 And then if any man shall say to you, Lo, here is Christ; or, lo, he is there; believe him not: 22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. 23 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things.

24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, 25 And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. 26 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then shall he send his angels, and shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from the uttermost part of the earth to the uttermost part of heaven.

Luke 21:12-28 (KJV)

12 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's sake. 13 And it shall turn to you for a testimony. 14 Settle it therefore in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye shall answer: 15 For I will give you a mouth and wisdom, which all your adversaries shall not be able to gainsay nor resist. 16 And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends; and some of you shall they cause to be put to death. 17 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. 18 But there shall not an hair of your head perish. 19 In your patience possess ye your souls.

20 And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh. 21 Then let them which are in Judaea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto. 22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled. 23 But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck, in those days! for there shall be great distress in the land, and wrath upon this people. 24 And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. 27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

So, this is not only a time of "great tribulation" (Greek: thlipsis megalee), but they are characterized as days of "affliction" (Greek: thlipsis), days of "vengeance" (Greek: ekdikeeseoos), and "great distress (Greek: anagkee megalee) upon the Land" and "wrath" (Greek: orgee) upon this people." Furthermore, Lukas gives the additional information that these people (the Jews) shall "fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations." Then, "Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled." This happened already in the First Century A.D. It's called the Diaspora, and they have been suffering this "great tribulation" since that time, even until now. They finally have a homeland again, but even to this day they suffer persecution in other countries as well as the terrorism in their own Land! While it's their own fault, it's a "tribulation" they've been suffering for almost 2,000 years and will continue to suffer until they can learn to say, "Baruwkh haba' b-shem YHWH." "Welcome, Comer in the authority of YHWH."

As far as the "shortening of the days," the times of actual pressure during these last 2,000 years have been reduced enough so as to allow them to recuperate from time to time. If the pressure had been steady, they would have been wiped out as a people.

cutting short the great tribulation for the sake of those who were martyred as a result of it just doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

If God shorten the great tribulation that will mean He will save the foolish virgins leftbehind. Its not like that,

God will save the wise virgins be4 the tribulation and the foolish virgins shall be left : Matt 24:40 "Then there will be two men in the field; one will be taken and one will be left.

So its the day be4 the rapture which shall be shortened.
