You are so right about the 1 John verse.  I think all sins fall under those three categories.  I always have.  It's also how he tempted Eve.

It's the devil's main three weapons.  Why?  Because those are the three things that caused him to fall.

Pride of Life:

  • Eve saw that the fruit would make her wise [like God knowing good from evil].
  • Jesus was tempted to jump from the Temple pridefully "proving" he was God's Son with all authority.
  • The devil wanted to be God proclaimed it to be so.  [From Isaiah 14:12 = "I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit on the mount of assembly on the heights of Zaphon; I will ascend to the tops of the clouds, I will make myself like the Most High."

Lust of the Eye

  • Eve saw the fruit was pleasing to the eye.
  • Jesus was tempted to have all the splendor of the all the kingdoms of the world.
  • The devil saw his own beauty and became evil.  [From Ezekiel 28:11-19 = "You were the anointed Cherub......Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor."

Lust of the Flesh

  • Eve saw the fruit was good for food.
  • Jesus was tempted to turn rocks to bread for his hungry stomach.
  • I don't see a scripture putting the devil in the state of the lust of the flesh, but he surely did crave "his throne" to be above God.
