Reading Genesis. At 32:28 God wrestles with Jacob and says he'll be called Israel. For reasons that are not clear, He (not disguised as a wrestler) says it again @ 35:10. Given the Bible is the Word of God and God just said he will be known as Israel, why does 37:1 refer to him as Jacob again?

It takes place multiple times throughout the book of Genesis, where Jacob is referred to as Jacob, and also Israel.  To me it has always come across as a matter of clarity, but just to point out what I am talking about, look at the first three verses of chapter 37.

Genesis 37  Jacob lived in the land of his father's sojournings, in the land of Canaan.

2 These are the generations of Jacob.

Joseph, being seventeen years old, was pasturing the flock with his brothers. He was a boy with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father's wives. And Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father. 3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than any other of his sons, because he was the son of his old age. And he made him a robe of many colors.

You'll notice in verse 3 he is called Israel.  Another important aspect to consider, is that when God gives a name, or a new name, it is a name that God has chosen for that individual.  We are told that each of us will be given a new name by God in eternity, which is probably the name we are already known to Him as now, even though others refer to us by our birth name.

Through the prophets, God stated that the messiah would be called Immanuel, meaning God with us.  Yet God's angel told Joseph to name the child Jesus, or Yeshua in Hebrew.
