I know lot of people say joy is permanent, happiness is temporary and on and on. But Bible simply does not teach that. And personally I don't think a person can be joyful and be not happy! May be there is a slightly different meaning to the words. But I think they co-exist.

Joy is from the Holy Spirit and is internal, it controls, calms and soothes our soul, it gives us an inner peace no matter what the circumstances might be, ...good or bad. Happiness depends on our circumstances and can cause our soul to rejoice or be depressed. But the true joy of the Lord is our strength Nem 8:10, ...no matter what the circumstance may cause, ...rejoicing or depression.
